Stock Exchange, 29 BROADWAY, N. Y. FINANCIAL MARKETS Speculation in Stocks Contracts as Money Rates Advance. Speculation In stocks has been l'P ht in volume in recent days, but pries have : been strong ■• •< rule on purely P*" 0 " | fessional movements. The Street al j ready has elected Mr. D.x. and ncc-ordlnC to it» point of view Colonel Roosevelt l.aa been eliminated as a politics] factor, | for which the speculative community is i singing songs of joy to the tune of "AH j hall, the Kane is here.** Wall Street i! ' for Dix. therefore 11 is for Murphy. and from Murphy and his brand of statesmen speculators appear to »>*> looking fnr MM luscious fruit in the near future. although they have Tin veil defined Idea of what Kort of plums the Murphy men could giv« them. The Street la betting | on Mr. Dix and it baa ho*>n advancing , stock market prices on th*» assumption ■ that he will b^ elected! Democratic sne j cess in this state nd hi Congress elee- I tions throughout th« country -would b<" ! gor»d news for speculators, "who have i forgotten that intrinsic values never have been strengthened by nemooratio pollcies. and if the professional element, fellows precedent it will sHI stocks on 1 the publication of this "pood" news. i which it has been discounting. Further more, it doubtless will sell stocks- for a tim« if Mr. Stimso n is successful, but on i any decline that may follow a Republi can victory conservative interests will buy securities to hold for higher prices I that eventually will be recorded. Elec tion results, however, .ire not likely to bf a factor in the market for any length «»f time in the rest of the year, as mone tary renditions and the course of our •industries will assert themselves as governing Influences In speculative and lnv*stm**nt movements. Banking Interests that nre devoting their time to making a better market for American investment securities at home, and abroad are nor apprehensive over the future. Indeed, they believe that in the new year there -Rill be an ample supply of money for Investment operations, nncl that corporations that need additional funds will experience no difficulty in placing new capital issues !on reasonable terms. At the moment money market factors should serve -. keep the stock market quiet and dis courage the placing of new securities, but ii.si.it of s:;xty days there probably will hf a readjustment of condition* that will warrant a broader and better mar ket for all securities. Indications point j to a. more active business situation in the coming year. In the iron and steel trade, which is one of the best barom eters of industrial conditions, sentiment is improving; while over the last few weeks actual business has shown dis tinct betterment, authority for this statement coming from the head of the United States Steel ration, who i asserts that conditions .ire sound and that recent developments warrant the belief that the railroads soon will order equipment, rails and structural mate rials in volume. Reports of demoraliza tion in industrial circles ar«* not justified, while th«* extent of the recession a trade In the last six months has been exag gerated. Railroad earnings, hank clearings and commercial failures have not indicated real business depression, and as far as the gross receipts of the transportation companies are concerned as an index of our Industries the weekly and monthly tijrures present every reason for opti mism over business conditions. Net learnings continue to make unfavorable comparisons with the heavy returns of f a year ago. but there are fow roads that are not reporting a substantial surplus after dividend requirements. Buying of rails for 1S»11 delivery has begun, and before the close of the current year orders aggregating several hundred thousand tons will be placed. "The Iron Ape." the. leading trade authority, say ins in its last issue -•.■•■ | rie has practically closed orders for about thir i ty-three thousand tons, and that the ■ Pennsylvania and New York Central re quirements axe now under considera tion, as are those of the Norfolk I West ern and several large Western com panies. There are various factors in the present situation upon which one may base the prediction of improvement in stocks and business after the turn of the year, but buyers of securities on borrowed funds at prevailing: levels I should bear m mind tha.t prices already j have enjoyed material appreciation from •the low levels of 1910, that there has j been a large distribution of stocks I bought at a cheaper range, and that ! substantial speculative interests may Uike advar.ta.cre of money market con ! ditions to bring about lower quotations ' before January 1. Call money rates have shown progres | sive strength In the last six days. Honey continues to move to the interior, the banks are losing on their operations with the Sub-Treasury and sterling ex change tendencies at this centre, while in our favor, do not encourage the ex jn-ctation of large imports of gold from Europe, despite increasing exports of 1 merchandise from this port. A demand I for sold in L#ondon for American ac i count will be opposed by the Bank of | England, and even though our foreign trade is improving and Europe may be disposed to buy our securities II will require many months of favorable ex port balances and larg«> investment ■•' foreign funds in American stocks and bonds to place this country in a posi tion to control the international money 'market. We have l«H>n through a lon*- H nor of falling trad* balances, while in the same lime our expenditures abroad have t»een enormous, to say nothing of ! regular Interest payments due to for . [gn holders of our securities, heavy freight charges on commerce carried in foreign ships and enormous remittances ! by European born American citizens to th<> old country- It is «mk-ou raging to rote however, a change for the better In the outward movement of merchan i diM- and a declining tendency In the v<.i ' mi" of imports, two factors which prom i Ise In time to add tremendous strength j to the financial situation in this country.
