On a moderate volume of business stock market prices moved to a higher level it) yesterday's operations, cover hie of shorts and buying for a rise on the theory that weak spots had been eliminated in last week's decline, sup plying the lever, that carried the leading issues from 1 to 2 points above Satur day's closing ligrures. In the industrial list American Smelting and Refining: was the strongest feature, the price of the issue responding quickly to rumors : of the purchase by the company of the Guggenheim Exploration Company's holdings of American Smelters Securi ties common stock; also to the favorable Impression created by the financial in terest taken in the Guggenheim prop erties by the largest banking houses in the Street. It is a noteworthy fact that the underwriting by Kuhn. Loeb & Co. of the American Smelters Securities Company bonds is the lirst instance of financing by this conservative firm of an industrial proposition. The metal shares are selling as a rule at relatively low prices, and. according to the char acter of tl •• current buying of Ameri can Smelting; AmaJgamated Copper and United States Steel quotations for ; the group will advance to higher levels I as market conditions warrant. I In th< railroad list Union Pacific sup plied a large proportion of the total deal ings and led in point of Btrength, the. advance being accompanied by a re port that the stock soon would be listed In Paris. The same report has been beard before in the Street. Paris would do well to admit both Union Pacific and United States Steel to trading on the Bourse, but unfortunately the French men have not awakened to the knowl edge of the Intrinsic merit of these se curities. The general market was dull in the afternoon and lost some of its early strength, but sentiment in specu lative Quarters appeared to favor the idea of further improvement in the cur rent uoekl St. Paul was inclined to heaviness, it price doubtless being based on the theory that the poor show ing ma-Je bs the Great Northern's gross earnings for the month of October fore shadowed similar results by the St. Paul property. A decision by the Su preme Court <-!" Missouri which in deny ing the Missouri Pacific Railway's ap peal in a case involving the long and short haul upheld the provision In the rate law against charging more for a short haul than for a long haul passed v. ithout iv.ii- In the Stn ■ I Sterling exchange rates advanced yes terday, local loan quotations showed a somewhat easier tendency and foreign discounts were firmer. The showing trade by Saturday's bank statement discouraged the Idea in speculative quar ters that money would advance to a high level ".t any time In trie rest of the year, but in conservative banking quar ters this theory was not entertained ox c»-pt on the assumption of a quiet stock markei in the remaining weeks of 1010. Bank statemeni figures showed an In crease in reserve, a decrease In loans and a reduction In the excess of loans over deposits, the changes suggesting 1 a determination on the part of the local institutions to strengthen recources through the liquidation of loans until currency begins to move to this centre in volume. The demand for monej In London is active and there does not ap- IK-ar to be the slightest chance of ship ments .f gold from that centre t" New York in the near future; indeed, exports ..f the metal from hr-re would be more in line itli actual international money market conditions. Sin< c Friday Ihe banks hen have gained a substantial amount on their operations with the Sub-Treasury, but their shipments to the West have been heavy. General business In the West Is more active, and I b money is dearer In Chicago and other 1 Western .in.- than in Nen York <"ur rency doubtless will continue to move in volume t.. Western points for some time to come. In th» last^week there has been a considerable shifting of local Stock Exchange loans to Buropi N. Y. AND OTHER GAS SECURITIES. Hiri.Ajk^d. j :.
