FINANCIAL MARKETS
Call Money Easy, While Sterling
Exchange Advances.
Transactions in stocks were light in
I volume, and price changes as a rule
! showed unimportant differences from the
j closing of -■. preceding day. Although
.man; traders favored a position on the
j bull side of the market they were im
willins to make extended commitments.
i owlnc in large part to the refupal of the
j outsiders to exhibit interest in the deal
j ings, the latter ling to Interpret the
I speech of the chairman of the Inter
> state Commerce Commission as a bull
(argument on the railroad stocks, despite
the fact that Wall Street insisted that
I Mr. Knapp's words indicated a disposi
■ tion on the part of the commission to
; grant the railroads' request for higher
! freight rates. Brokers apparently did
Tint read the chairman's remarks care-
I fully. He did not commit himself to
j higher rates, nor did he say. as reported
j in the Street, that an increase in rates
was necessary. He simply said that the
I railroads were entitled to rates which
would serve for certain specified pur
poses without Baying: whether or not ex
isting rates did not meet all require
ments. Speculators who had little else
I m do than theorize after ■ aching the
! conclusion that rates would he ad
j vaneed went 'ho'rae..- -satisfied that with
I higher rates lower wages would develop.
I Who is loony now may well be asked
'of operators who bring forth such an
{argument. Higher rates would keep the
; executive officers of the railroads busy
j receiving delegations from the railroad
j unions with requests for ■• Bed pay.
i The genera! market closed strong on
j covering by traders who had sold earlier
j in the day on the expectation of liquida
tion based on th^ troubles in Mexico.
Local bankers with correspondents in
Mexico arc not aiarmed over the Bitua
i tier.. Cal! money was easier and sterling

I advanced.
The demand for money for stock pur
| poses is extremely light, in spite of the
I fact that money rates have been made
I easy in the hope <>f attracting an active
; outside participation in current specula

loan renewals at ."• per cent. Prom pres
ent indications the current week will end
with tutal sales in th^ neighborhood of
1.500/Kml shares, with tli<* ruling rate for
call money under V. per cent.
The stock market is in a position that j
contains many elements of danger for j
the outsider who buys on borrowed j
funds, notwithstanding the fact that
prices have l>ec'n maintained at •• firm
level in the last month, with the excep
tion of the few days following the recent j
election. One month ago the leading J
railroad shares showed an average price j
of 117.<t7 and the chief industrials an
average of -" ••' The closing yesterday
averaged ll<i.i*> for the same railroad
issues arid 85 r.i for the same indus- j
trials, pared with 127.35 for the rail
roads and 98.03 for the industrials at
this time in \\«o and 105.50 and 73.62
the low points of the present year.
There ure some stocks in which there is
a margin for further improvement, based .
on intrinsic worth, but In the larger
number of issues market prices are not .
out at proportion to investment value.

CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE.
Arbitrating between New York and Phil
adelphia in Lehiph Valley stock was a
feature of the market on the Consolidated
Exchange. Two hundred shares sold early
in The ofay at '*'•'■ This Is the equivalent
of a price of 94% in the Philadelphia mar
ket, where the stock sells dollars a share.
In the New York market it will be traded
in on a percentage basis, the same as
Reading. Later in the day twenty shares
sold at 188%. An active market in the
stock is expected to develop on the ex
change So far as the general li^t was
concerned, the undertone exhibited firm
ness most of the day. although business
was only fairly active. Some of the bid
ding reflected covering operations by trad
ers who were short and who preferred to
cover up over the holiday. Lending rates
for the half-weekly carry-over, however,
indicated at the clos=» a still large uncov
ered short interest in Union Pacific. De
