Lannon. captain in the Fire Department, injured at the stockyards fire Thursday, died late to day This makes the official list of dead twenty-four. The inquest will begin on Wednesday morning. A peculiarly pathetic prone occurred at the fire this afternoon, when the body of Captain Dennis Doyle, the last to be recov ered, was taken from the ruins. Pipeman Edward Doyle, a son of the captain, col 16-. ■'. when his' father's body was found. Edward Doyle had been at the fire for nearly thirty-six hours. He had assisted in finding the body of his brother, ' Nicholas Doyle, also killed in the fir-, and refused to leave the ruins until that of his father was recovered. The citizens* relief committee, of which Ilarlow N. Hipginbotbam is chairman and John J. Mitchell treasurer, established headquarters at a downtown bank to-day. It mmm announced that a fund of &SO.OOO was desired. Of this sum $50,030 had been subscribed when the committee's efforts closed for the day. As the members of ten engine companies ■were playing water on warehouse No. € Trhere the flames broke out afresh this morning, the walls collapsed. Captain John TVindheim of Engine Company 64 was knocked down by flying timber and seri ously injured. In the confusion William Sheridan, eighteen years old, a clerk In the stockyards, was knocked off a platform and perhaps fatally Injured. Fire Chief James Horan, who lost his life yesterday, told the City Council Build- Ing Committee last Wednesday that he did •not care how high buildings were in the downtown district, but what was needed was better buildings at the stockyards. Hanoi will have a public and semi-mili tary funeral. In the cortege will be mem •hers of the City Council, a regiment of cavalry, a squadron of mounted police and platoons of police and firemen on foot, members of various public bodies and many private citizens. The city will pay the funeral expenses of all the firemen killed in the fire, furnish free medical aid to all Injured and continue for at least six months the pay of the firemen killed. SAYS HE SET FATAL FiRE Philadelphia Police Place Little Credence in "Confession." Philadelphia, Dec. 23.— A foreigner. glv inc his name as John Karneso. walked up 10 a policeman near the scene of the Fried- Jander fire and. pointing to a picture 'of the binned building in a newspaper, told the policeman that he had set fire to the place. The policeman did not believe the man. but when he persisted be was taken Into custody. He was questioned by police officials and then sent to headquarters, where he was turned over to police surgeons for exami nation. The authorities say they do not believe be started the fire. Karnego said he had formerly boa employed at the leather factory and had been diPcharg«HL Three weeks ago he applied for reinstate ment, he said, but was not re-employed. The Citizens* Permanent Relief Commit tee, at a meeting at the Mayor's office this afternoon, issued a call for the raising of 555.000 for the benefit of the widows and children of the fourteen dead men. Two New Apartment Houses. Plans were filed yesterday for two new apartment houses, to cost $800,000. A twelve story apartment house, with stores on the ground floor, will be erected at the southeast corner of Seventh ave nue and 54th street for the Charles E. McManus Building and Operating Com pany. The building will be fireproof, with a facade of brick and limestone, with ac commodations for sixty-eight families. It will have a frontage of 100.5 feet in the avenue, where the stores will be located, and 89.10 feet on the street, where will be located the entrance, which will be orna mented with four massive lonic columns. The architects, Neville & Bagge. have esti mated the cost of this new structure at 1700,000. ' An eight story apartment house will be built on the south side of 115 th street, 175 I feet west of Broadway, for the Carnegie Construction Company, of which Charles Xewmark is president, at a cost of $100,000. The building will be fireproof. It will have a facade of brick, with limestone and terra cotta trimmings, with a frontage of 49.11 feet- There will be accommodations for \ thirty-two families. Detailed plans and specifications for a $2,000,000 department store in Newark were filed with the Buildings Department of that city yesterday. L. Bamberger & Co.. who already have a large department store in Newark, will r-rect the new building. The structure will be of skeleton steel construction throughout, with the exterior of ornamental terra cotta brick. There will be eighteen elevators for passengers, each elevator separated from the main structure by a reinforced fire wall. The construction will be fireproof throughout. There will be approximately 405.W0 square feet of floor space. The site takes up all but thirty-five feet of the entire frontage on Market street. The building will cover 235 feet on Halsey street, 144 feet on Market street and Ui feet on Washington street, taking in the plot on the latter thoroughfare now occupied by the Empire Theatre.
