A s you may have noticed, the new book contains 40 more pages, yet it is twelve percent lighter and twenty five percent thinner. It is printed upon M Telephone Paper,"a new variety of paper, very thin and very strong, that had to be espe? cially designed for our use. The new telephone book has 760 pages and conttini 275.000 names. ?It is in many respects a unique and re? markable book, made possible by a long series of improvements. It is all the more remarkable when we remember that only 33 years ago the New York City Telephone Directory was a card containing 252 names. Our next step will be to improve the type and arrangement of listings and to arrange with our printers to double the capacity of the presses. After many tests and experiments by prominent oculists and typograph? ical experts, a new type has been designed, which is as plain and d.stinct as can be made. This new type will be used in the next issue of the Directory to be pub? lished in February, 1912. The presses which now turn out 20,000 completed books a day, will be added to and will be made to turn out 40.000 a day. Even at this record-breaking speed it will take two weeks to print a simile edition of the tele? phone book. Our Directory people are rot content with this progress, but are continuing their studies to produce a still better book at even greater spee?j. NEW YORK TELEPHONE COMPANY
