Th? predominant part played by motor vehi? cles in solving the transportation problems of to-day has given the annual Auto Show an educational value never before so fully realized. The present-day comfort in which a person may ride and the dispatch and economy with which commercial work may be accomplished were unheard of a few years ago. The closing hours of the Palace Show promise to be even more busy than those which have gone before. Prospective purchasers who have left the final selection until the last moment and exhibitors anxious to close all possible sales will have their hands full until the end. Thit u ont of Axt Alro Trucks in tht service of Joseph Stern <$ ?SssbI, ALCO Motor Trucks The Factor of Safety is Five EVERY Aleo truck is built to ?withstand ? shock five time* [greater than the norma] strain. Tin- factor of safety built into the Aleo trink is five. This is a high factor,, an ?ill engineeri know. In a hue?- ?bridge the factor of safety is only two. Aseume thai .?? five ton AlcoHruclr; ?with five tons aboard is travelling aloug at nine miles an hour. Assume that a rear ? bed drops accidentally into a hole ton inches deep. The rear springs, til?" ?rear axle anil the frame are prepared for ?the shock. They arc prepared for even a far pnaior shock?and not only ono hut hundreds and hundreds like it. Por Aleo springs, and axles and ?Trames aro tested in the Aleo shops by ?Special superhuman machines which register how much strain each can withstand. As an instance an Aleo truck is run over the country near the Aleo shops tor ?i road test. A wheel is dropped into a bole. An instrument attached records the strain in pounds pressure. The Aleo engineers know l)v ?leading the instrument if the springs have the desired factor of safety. To test an nr\le in the Aleo physics laboral on, the axle i-> plac-ed on a machine representing spring seats and wheel centers, und the load is applied. If it is a five ton rear axle the pressure applied is five times the capacity load, or 25 tons, plus the weight of the chassis. The machine AMERICAN LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY, which does the testing is capable of a draw-bar pull of 500,000 pounds. That is the reason ytm never .tee the wheel* of an Alen truck toeing in at the top and ont at the bottom. When a tcheel toe* in at the top and out at the bottom it is a sure indication of a ueak a.rle. Rut a largo factor of safety, such as five, in the Aleo truck, does not mean a super-heavy monster. a The Aleo truck is no heavier than | the average truck of its rating. The reason for this is clear : by using materials of high physical properties with great ductility?materials that show a high elastic limit and tensile strength ? materials minus seams, flaws, checks, pipes and cracks, the weight can be reduced to a minimum. The analysis and specifications covering these materials are deter? mined by long heat treating and labo? ratory tests?an experience common to the American Locomotive Company. A large factor of safety also means long life. No one can tell hozc many years an Jico frame :cill last?perhaps longer than a man s lifetime. A front or a rear axle may last twenty, 'hirty or forty years. And thus through the truck. An Aleo truck never wears out. ... ? Few considerations are as impor? tant in buying a truck as that of the factor of safety. Study it in the Aleo exhibit at the motor truck show. You will see with your own eyes what a transportation experience qf seventy-six years means in motor truck building. - - 1886 Broadway, NEW YORK Builders aUo of Aleo 6-cylinder and 4-cyiinrJcr Motar ?Cora and Aleo Tasicat?
