Contrary to the expectatlotiB of traders who had stayed short of atocka over night, the markrt optvned yesterday with eonsiderable actlvlty and strength. Tbe heavy sellera of stocks on Monday dld not follow their bearlsh tactics. whlch caused the sharp decline in prices, and during the tirat half hour of trading recoveries were made and the market aasumed a stronger tone. There waa little cn cuuragement in the reported actlon of the Amerlcan securltles ln London, as the list praaBBtad an irrcgularlty that could be accepted by elther the bulls or beara as Indlcating a trend elth.-r I way. After the tirst period of short | tovcring had ceased, the market be i came dull and prices began to ease j off fractionally from the high quota j tions of the morning. There was no ' news of a specially bearlsh reflectlon ! ti> lnfluence further depresslon. and though sentiment was lncjlned to the bear slde, commltmenta ln that direc '? tlon were held up awaitlng develop menta. It was considered by those who hold an optimistlc poBltJon ln the. market that the fact that forelgn liquidation of Amerlcan shares is les sening is a trlbute to the flnancial undertone there, and lt wae accepted as an lndlcation that a reverse in the tlde of trading sentiment on the Con? tlnent would soon set ln. The topic of conversatlon that offered dlscusBlon for the tlme was the expected arrlval of Amerlcan securltles purchased re? cently during the forced liquidation abroad. The Mexican sltuation was given some passlng comment, but no apparent Interest was noted whlch had an effect on transactlons. United States Steel and Keadlng were the stocks which featured the buylng movement. Canadlan Paclflc, the Cop pers. and some of the specials were Btrong. and St. Paul made recovery after a weak openlng and attracted some attention. The tone of the mar? ket continued qulet but steady throughout the day until ne*r the closing tlme. when the beara attempted to raid prlces. But the buylng yester? day was Bumclent to abBorb much of the stock offerlngs, so the flnal quota tions, whlle irreguiar. made a favor able showlng compared wlth Monday's closing prices. Commlssion houses ex? pressed tho t-elir-f that foreign unfav? orable influencea would be f?-lt less hereafter, and that the market would have an opiortunlty to recover. It must be kept ln mind, however, that recurrlng forelgn liqutdatkn may I continue for some time, whlcb ln turn i would keep our stock market ln an unsettled condition. So far aa the money outlook affects pricea, lt wlll not be long before the West will be gin to send money to thls market, and later the interior drain oa th* New ! York banks wlll be checked. With the ' money question favorably dlspoaed of ! and buslness ln every braneh showlng j such splendld improvement, the stock j market wlll have plenty of incentive for betterment, portlcularly aftf-r electlon, but the market, llke people, haa a contrary etreak, and requlrea careful watching.
