Heavy Liquidation and General Losses Marked Day's Trading. Contlnued unsettled feeling with de tidedly bearish aentimeut overshad owed the stock niarket yesterday. Stocks were sold indisorlmlnately. From , the conaensus of opinion among tho commisslon houses, the selling was due to pools that were overloaded and to the small holders induced to part with stocks by a concerted drive started in the interest of some of the manipula tors, who wanted to clear the market of the hangers on and create a big short interest. All Borta of rumora were circulated to induce liquidation, and Unlted Statea Steel was the chief security selected for heavy attack. Talk of business segregation of tho Steel interesta and an attempted an alysis by market students as to the possible outcome ln the event of such separatlon helped to create accentu ated unrest in the mlnds of traders and a depressed atmosphere which de stroyed both Judgment and ordinary market aagacity. So far as actual con ditions presented themselves, the mar? ket situation was no more dlstouraging than it has been. The trade reports contlnued to offer a cheerful outlook for the near future. The Europc-an clouds, while not dlspersed, seemed to be drlftlng by, and tha tendency as indicated by the development of the Balkan affairs during the past few daya seemed to be in favor of a final peaceful adjustment. lf it be that all signa of progress and fundamental de? velopment have been mistaken, then there is some reason for aelling stand ard investment securities. Un the other hand, lf the country is enjoying tho degree of prosperity which com mercial agencies, bankers, manufact urera and the various iines of indua tries have reported from week to week, then the atandard securities with rec? ords of earnings behind them sufllcient to warrant the bellef that the present rates of dividend will be continued should not bo sacrUiced during bear manlpulation of a purely professional character. The local money situation dlsplayed no tendency to higher rates and loana were renewed yesterday at 7 per cent. Tlie outlook for easy money untll after the flrst of the year, how? ever, is not good. Later in the montn rates will probably be higher, as the banks will not be disposed to be more liberal ln loans and the demand for funds will show llttle inclination to de crease; in fact, toward the end of the *ear the demand will in<rf>aso. The suggestion by George R. Sheldon that the government deposit funds among out-of-town banks to relleve the situa? tion, it ia reported, was not receiveJ favorably by the Treasury Department. As stated in thia column last Monday, such a plan would meet with favor generally. The prejudlce whlch naturally exists toward havlng tho government rush to the aid of Wall Street would not be stlrred up, yet New York banks would be beneflted by a lessenlng of the interlor demands on their reserves. The atock market had an actlve opening yesterday but was marked oy lrreguiarity and only a slight aign of any austainlng buying power. There were declines in most of th? standard lssues which were augmented by heavy pressure aa the mornlng advanced. The support whlch on Monday seemed to be afforded some stocks at certaln k-vela waa absent yesterday, and while every aale necessitated a buyer, tho buying was forced and occurred only on the down grade. This by gome ob servers waa thought to indlcate an ac cumulation of stocks by the strong in? teresta, but auch deduction was not consoling. There appearcd to bo no bottom, aa prlcea went off with prao Ucally no evidence of resistance. Around the roiddle of the day tho helght of the demorallzed condltlon of the market aeemed to be reached. 6top loss ordera were caught with great rapidity, and there waa an apparent rush to eell anythlng and everything on the Llst Rumora were rlfe regard lng all events of an adverse nature that could posslbly caat gloom over the market All the real newa of the day waa tgnored. European cables telllng of an improved prospect for a peaceful eettlement of the Balkan puestion re celved no attentlon. It was a day of contlnued liquidation in auch actlvlty that the total transactlons were near a milllon share session. A slight rally waa attempted near the close.
