I Continued Depression?Stead? ier Tone in Late Trading. The market yesterday had not recov end from ita drastic liquidation of Thursday, and the opening prlcea failtd to unfold any Impressive evi d.-i.cc- of strength ln the Ust. Floor traders were bearlsh, stnall investors wei* scared and the bears were deter nln*d During the flrst half hour or oo the market was very active and trunsaotiona were on a large scale. Buying appeared to be falrly good, but tliere was no effort toward an aggres ?|ve foilow up, bo that the trend was niure downward than otherwiBe. Good upe was made of the pessimistic oppor tunities afforded by the rumor of a rlgM mvesOgation of the condltlons and buainess methods of the Stock Ex ,-hange, the much talked of money trust movement* and the dire resultB that would foilow the eegregation of all large corporatlons, and particularly the United Statea Steel Corporatlon. Mr. Morran waa reported to ba 111. and the imag-lnatlon of the beara waa glven full away for predictlng a calamlty in the event that hia illness abould take a seri oua turn. Around tha leading commia alon houae* sentlment waa very much divided. By some lt waa not consld ered a good aign that liquidation had become ao general and that *elling or dera were comlng ln from customera who ordlnarily hold their atocka. Re gardlng the tendency, the outlook pre aented a very debatabl* condition. After sucb varloue liquidation as tha last few daya has ahown tha market ia entltled to a awlng; ln the other dlrec? tlon, and without the overhanging un certalnty due to tbe Harriman merger decision and ita effect on a posslble eegregation of various other corpora? tlons it would be falrly reaijonable to asaume that the next move would be upward, but in the light of r-*"'*1* evcnta tradera hesitaie to commlt themselves beyond the temporat. ac? tion which does not offer much enoour agement, as no aggressive buying power has been ln evidence. In the aftemoon the market exhib ited a steadier tone. and there waa a hardening of prices and a tendency toward recovery, considerable reslst ance being marked among the atandard ralls. The volume of trading yesterday was not as large as on Thuraday, al? though it was a comparatively active day. London waa a buyer, and there was a more cheerful tone ln London, due to the better Continental outlook. .Most of the encouraging influences were entlrely lost sight of in the min glcd hope and despalr reflected in the price movements in thia market, par tlcBlarly among the industrlals. Money w.is eaualer, and the outlook for a fa rorable rmnk *tatem*^nt to-day was ? ! ?mi.smg. Elimlnating imagtnative :> froCB the market faetors, there is llttle t" warrant the wholesale sell Ing arltne?ed during the last two days. ?
