ADVERTISING TALKS _3> Willtitn C. Freerrtdn It has been a great pnvilege to me to sit in several advertising con ferences with General du Pont. L. J. Horowitz and others, regarding the initial advertising campaign to be conducted for the new Equitable Build? ing, which will not be cdmpleted until May 1. 1915. Just think of starting to advertise for tcnants twenty months in ad vance of the completion of a building! Just think of advertising, not oc casionally, but every wcck for twenty months in eleven metropolitan newspapers! Just think of advertising, also, in newspapers in several other cities throughout the Unitcd States; also in some newspapers in fogeign lands! Mr. L. J. Horowitz, who is the president of the Thompson Statrett Company. has the contract to erect the Equitable Building. General du Pont, who is the head of the big syndicate that is supply ing the funds for the erection of the building, insists that Mr. Horowitz, besides serving as the contractor, should also serve as the business man? ager for this great oflfice building. This is an unusual circumstanca. Who ever heard of a contractor being asked to serve as manager, also? The first thing that Mr. Horowitz advised doing was to start an ad? vertising campaign. He knows no other way of keeping people informed. He is going to keep them informed about the Equitable Building during the process of its construction. He argues, and rightly, too, that by the time the building is completed there should be, and undoubtedly will be, enough tenants secured to take up nearly?if not quite?all of the space that is for rent. It is a novel experiment. It should win because of its unusualness. The advertising has been prepared with great care. It will be worth your while to read it. It will be real news. General du Pont has taken a great interest in the advertisementa which have been prepared He surprised us all with his sensible and good suggestions. He had said all along that he did not know anything about advertising. That is generally the way with men of big affairs. They freely express themselves as being unfamiliar with advertising; they try to tell us all that they are not interestcd in reading advertise menta, yet I have never met a man?big or little ih business?who is not thoroughly familiar with houses that advertise in a striking way, who do the kind of advertising that leaves an impress on the mind. I guess General du Pont has an inco-ne of over $1,000,000 a year. There ia no need for him to worry. He could take things mighty easy if he wanted to, but no! He wants to achieve; he wants to do big things; he wants to keep active; he wants to be a part of the history and the glory that will come with the completion and success of the Equitable Building. Just now he iti as much interested in the advertising. which will Btart on September 2, aa a boy with his first pair of trouflerfl. It is great to aee a man. who does not need to, take such a great interest in doing a big work. What a great difference there is between a man fircd with ambition and a man who ia content to clip coupons and let the world wag aa it will! , You and I know w4*i*m n-an ?-? would tie up to, don t wc?
