operating revenue of $180,875 for Au?
gust, an increase of $31,861 over the
same month last year, eaual to 22 per
cent, and net revenue of $90,R64, a gain ?
of 5 per cent. Gross earnings for the i
twelve months ended August 31 were
$2,0-6,234, 21 per cent greater thsn in
the vear preceding, while net earnings
increased from $954,160 to $1.120,170, I
or a gain of 17 per cent.

"Dun's Review" will say: "Hesitancy
in entering upon new commitments con?
tinues and a spirit of caution is every?
where manifest, yet the confident feel-,
ing in business circles is maintained.
The prevailing high rates for accommo- '
dation still exert a restraining influ- i
ence upon trade expansion, but modor- I
ate propres* is noted in various lead- j
inir lines, especially in the Eastern and
Western sections of the country. Stim?

"Commercial failures this week in
the United States are 381 against 288

"Hradstreet's" has the following: ;
"There is a rather brighter tinge to '
commercial and financial affairs this
week, and the i-tubboro optimism so
long displayed finds more apparent
basis for expression. Prominent in the
direction of improvement may be cited
popular acceptuncc of the really ex-1
cellent outlook for the late crops, a
more cheerful feeling, with higher
prices for cotton at many points in the ?
South and increased Inquiries and firm- '
er feeling in the textiles, notably cot?
tons and woollens, for the latter of
which foreign inquiry for war purposes
is noted. On the other hand, the slow
?Ml of manufacturing industry as a
whole is notable, lumber and the build?
ing trades generally are depressed, and
the reduced earning ability of much of
the industrial population offsets the
undeniably profitable returns of the
surplus grain producing regions."

change on London has touched since
the closing of the Stock Exchange on ?
July 30, a few days after the Euro?
pean war began.
The decline in exchange was as- '
eribed to a variety of reasons, the
chief being the apparent success of the
city's note offering abroad as well of
here, with its implication that the
amount of exchange to be remitted
would not be anywhere near as large
as was expected a week ago.
Another important cause was the
broadening OX the London discount
market at the beginning of this week,
which made possible the discounting of
single name and other paper such as
was not even considered a few days
before. Hanking houses, too, have
_f-'!iin been drawing finance bills, bor?
rowing money in London for three
months on their own credit and selling
against the funds thus made available
for the demand drafts.
The high price received for demand
drafts so largely offset the cost of ne- ;
gotiating the finance bills as to give
the bankers drawing the bills the use
of the money for three months for
nothing and a profit of as much as 2
per cent besides. As a result there
has been considerable drawing of these
?lilis, with a commensurate increase In
the supply of exchange.

BRIEF WALL STREET NEWS
A gain of about $2,000,000 by the
banks is indicated by the reported
movements of currency this week. The
gain from the interior was $11.387,000,
shipment? including $974,000 national
bank notes sent to Washington for re?
demption. K\port* of gold to Canada
amounted to $7,200,000. The loss op
ordinary Sub-Treasurv transactions
was 92,108,000.
Exports of copper fox the weekended
September 17 totalled 4,560 tons, as
compured with 7,711 tons for the cor
lesponding week last year.
Directors of the Washington Power
Company have reduced the quarterly
dividend from $2 to $1 76 a share, pay?
able October 1 to holders of record
September 12.
