The human body wears out in two ways, i i. e., cither by long-continued use or by \ long-continued disuse. In the former case it is like bending a wire back and forth in one place until it. breaks,! and in the second it is the atrophy of \ organs or functions through disuse. ' The only way to stave off old ago is to eliminate all forms of abuse and lira aa Natura intended n? to live. - Commodities - I ndustr ial Cotton The cotton market was unsettled during yesterday's trading. The weaker July short interest apparently hs? se? cured cover on the short advance of the previous day. There was further cover? ing yesterday, but it was not as active and there was more July for sale at the increased premium over October. Part of this doubtless reflected the undoing of old straddles by operators who were more inclined to take existing profits ; than to run the risk that a spell of ! bad weather might cause a relatively | rapid advance in new crop months and ! a narrowing of differences between old . and new crop deliveries. Otherwise ; trading suggested evening-up for over the week-end, with declines followed by moderate rallies in the late trading on covering. After selling off to 25.40, or 69 points net lower, July closed at 25.76, a net decline of 41 points, and October and later deliveries were net : 2 points lower to 9 points higher, with ? the general tone steady. The market opened steady at an ad? vance of 16 to 25 points on covering promoted by the relatively firm cables and Thursday's strength in the near position. Offerings were soon supplied, however, and tho mnrket was easy dur? ing the middle of the day under real? izing, with July leading the decline. The selling of new crop months was ( held in check by apprehensions that the Eastern belt was receiving too much rain, and the difference between old and new crop deliveries narrowed from 258 points to about 214 points, with July closing 229 points above Oc? tober. The late rally of 20 or 30 points was due to a renewal of Liver : pool buying and covering, which may have been promoted by renewed talk of peace prospects or rumors that one of the submarines recently operating 1 in American waters had been de? stroyed. The reported sinking of a steamer j with 15,000 bales of cotton helped to unsettle the market during the middle I of the day, but it was not an im? portant factor and the attention of the trade seemed to centre on the further evening-up of near-month commit? ments and the uncertainties of the new crop outlook. ; Showers have been ratlied general in sections of the Eastern belt for the i past few days, and the forecast for continued showers or rains evidently caused some nervousness. Exports yesterday were 25,851 bales, making 3, 597,515 so far this season, against 5, 116,448 last year. Southern spot mar ; kets as officially reported were un changed to 25 points lower. Sustenance Cereals Wheat?Tho government report on j wheat, published yesterday afternoon, ' together with the report on other small grains, showed a splendid response by the farmers of America to the Presi? dent's appeal last fall for big crops. In every instance the acreage was in ex? cess of last year, spring wheat showing a gain of 21.5 per cent, the total area planted being 22,489,000 acres, com? pared with 19,039,000 planted last spring. The condition of the crip was unusually high. Winter wheat showed a condition of 83.6 per cent, compared with the ten year average of 80.7, while spring wheat was 95.2, against 93.7 per cent. ' The indicated yield of winter wheat was 687,000,000 bushels, and spring 344,000,000, making a total indicated crop of 931,000,000 bushels, compared with the final outturn last year of 650, ??28,000. With the exception of 1915, when the crop was 1,025,801,000, the present indication is for the largest crop on record. if no misfortune over? takes the crop between now and har? vest these figures may even be exceed? ed, and America wiii have an abundant supply both for home consumption and for export to Europe. Corn?.The corn market displayed unexpected strength during the day and at the cloee was IVi to 1% cents higher. There was moderate selling early in anticipation of a reaction from Thursday's advance and influenced by improved weather conditions in the West. Offers were well taken, how? ever, and several leading commission houses were heavy buyers. As the mar? ket advanced stop-loss orders were un? covered, and this added to the general strength. Cash markets in the West were firmer, and, while part of the ad? vance doubtless was due to technical conditions which have developed re? cently, while prices were on the down grade, it was thought that consumers ' were beginning to anticipate future re? quirements on the theory that receipts will be small after the new wheat crop begins to move.
