Pnces opened with an uncertain trend, but the list immediately be? came reactionary on moderate selling of rails. Offerings of that group were ascribed to disappointment at the failure of the Federal authorities to consummate contracts covering rental, etc. *? Such issues as Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific, Reading, Baltimore 4 Ohio, Norfolk & Western, Wabash preferred "A" and "B" and Missouri Pacific preferred fell back 1 to almost 2 points. United States Steel remained unresponsive to the remarkable ?quar? terly financial statement, making a gross reversal of slightly more than one point and closing at a loss of a substantial fraction on its usual large turnover. Shippings, motors, oils and an odd assortment of unclassified shares reacted 1 to 3 points, and tobaccos reflected the absence of professional interest, although Sumatra made a net gain of 1% point3. The day*3 most noteworthy development was a sudden decline during the afternoon in rates for call money from 6 to 4 per cent, on offerings cf large amounts by a prominent financial institution. The break was without influence in time funds, rates holding firm. Domestic bonds, including Liberty issues, were irregular, but the international group, notably Anglo-French 5s and Paris 6s, gained large fractions. Old United States bonds were unchanged on call. ?? Sustenance Cereals Wheat.?Private crop report? received 1 yesterday give quite a clear intimation ? as to what may be expected by the ; government report next week. One j authority makes the winter wheat crop ; 593,000,000 and the spring wheat crop 307.000,000 bushels, or a total of 900, ; 000.000 bushels, while another crop ex? pert places the winter wheat yield at | 592,500,000 and the spring at 313,700,000, or a total of 911,200,000 bushels. The last government report made the win? ter wheat crop 557,300,000 and spring 333,600,000, or a totai of 890,000,000 bushels, while last year'? total crop of both winter and spring was '151,500,000. The report showed that while there has been a slight falling off in the in? dicated crop of spring wheat, thrashing returns have revealed a larger yield of winter wheat than expected. Receipts at primary points were again large, and stocks are accumulating despite 'he fact that millers have be?in very active buyers of cash wheat in the West to fill a big demand for flour, and there has also been a very large export business done for shipment to Europe. Corn.?Private estimates on the corn crop gave an indicated yield of from 3,008,000,000 to 3.017,000.000 bushes, compared with the government figures last month of 3,160,000,000 and last year's final crop of 3,159,500,000. Some further damage reports were received from the Southwest, and the Oklahoma State report made the condition only 39 per cen:, compared with 80 per cent last month and 49 per cent last year. These reports caused quite active buy- ; ing at times during yesterday's ses- ' sion, and as sellers were inclined to be cautious the market developed strength and closed with net gams of lrsc to 2%c. The oats market was only ' moderately active, but prices were firmer in sympathy with corn, closing with net gains of '"2 to I'-ic. Private crop estimates indicated yields of 1,- , 409,000,000 bushels to 1.419,000,000, | compared with last month's govern- ? ment fi ?tu re s of 1,436,617,000 and last years' final crop of 1,587.286,000.
