At the Forty-eighth Street Theatre Edward H. Robins wil present a play by a new stage author, Marvin Taylor, cntitlei "Luck In Pawn." Mabel Taliaferro returns to the stage to pla; the leading role. The play relates the adventures of a Westcn girl who goes to a fashionable resort with ambitions to restor the family fortunes by her success as an artist, and who meet with romancs instead. ln the company are Roland Young, Rob ert AHen, Reina Carruthers, Robert Adams, Benjamin Krausei Florence Short. Brenda Fowler and Ann Warrington. At the Selwyn Theatre Arthuv Hammerstein present "Tumble In," a musical comedy, whose book by Otto Harbaci is an adaptation of a farce written by Mary Roberts Rinehar and Hopwootl. The music is by Rudolph Frirnl. Some Awfully Nice People ln "Room Thirteen By Harriette Underhill Ever since we attendcd "The Woman Room 13" on tho opening night, wo ished to have a talk with Samuel iupman and nsk him in just which rection he was trying to direct our rmpathic-. Of course. every one knows that you ?istalwa\s hate the villain and love ii- heroinc and uphold the hero in his ind adherence to the unwritten law, cn if he does rush in and shoot the >st lookitic man in the play one-half Dar after the eurtain goes up. But this play is ditTerent; at least we iponded differently. We felt from the rst that Lowell Sherman had been id!y treatcd, and when we talked with im later in the ovening he quito jreed with us. It seems like taking unfair advantage ' faman to run and get a tlivorce from im just because he gives you a couple [ grouiuls and not say anything to im about it beforchand; and then u't it rubbing it in a bit to go away ith your next husband and leave your irrcnt husband with nothing to re ind him of you but the divorce pa ?rs, which have just been served? And the next husband, Paul Ram :y. was sutarely to blame for the very npleasant complications which arose iter on. In his heart of hearts we innot believe that when he put a de >etive on his wife's trail he did it lerely to protect her. If he had men ioned to her one word of his sus irions of the other man, all would are been well. Of course, a playwright has to havo is people do strange and esoteric fiings'aiul live dp to standards which *em to tlie people on the other sidc f the footlights unnecessarily lofty or bere would never be any story. If people spoke when they ought to nd explained simple little things as ley went along that would make only eurtain raisor. Life is, of course, ul.v a series of eurtain raisers, any ay. After the first act we went back age, intent on tinding out from Gail atie how it felt to be an abandoncd oman. Gail sat in stato with three -' ? ' pearla around her neck and dkmond pin stuck carelessly in her lir. "I love it." shc said, as she stroked Russian sable coat contontedly. It aounded ?o cold-blooded, but we >d to admit that the sable coat was a ;aaty. "And where did you get it?" we *?ed. Mias Kano leaned forward. "If youll ?omite not to tell ni tell you! It at mine! I never owned a Russian Ale coat in my life! Kenneth Hill dn't break my heart and I'ra not an AMUSEMENTS abandoned woman who is suspected of his murder! I'm a hard-working actress who lives with her mother and raan ages to eke out an existencc by acting bchind the footlights and in front of the camera." With a moan we fted from such dar ing exploitation of respectability, rc solved to seek Lowell Sherman. Surcly ho would prove a real villain even if he had rather disappointed us in this play by revealing some human traits. But Mr. Mather told us he was drcss ing for the next act, so instead of again crawling over the people who W*cre fortunate cnough to have aisle seats, and making them disliko us morc than they already did, we waited back of the stage and saw the second act from the wings. Gail Kane made the heart-broken appeal to Kenneth Hill and hc promised to meet her at the Plaza, which he never did, for wc saw him dress and go home nftcr this. It's an ill shot that blows nobody any good! And then, suddenly, everybody shoutcd out directions and two men swung on the eurtain and it came fly ing down and electroliers were tossed about and in ten seconds you were once more in the apartment undcrneath. After Lowell Sherman had perpctra ted his dastardliest deed and staggered off with a wild laugh we met him for i the first time. And in spite of our reso lutions almost immediately the con versation drifted to checse and the relative merits of the various froinages ?and from that to food in general and from that to the high cost of drinking and from that to the absurdity of a law which could curtail ono's party at. t o'clock, thi: crux* of the ovening, and finally Mr. Sherman 'burst out with: "Do tell me this and you'll be my friend forever. Do you know any place to eat after the Mont Matrc closes?" We did, and we were about to tell when the publicity director stepped in. "Have you had your little chat and j has Mr. Sherman told you all you i wished to know about the drama?" To which we replied "Yes" and "No." And the eurtain had been up five i minute3 on the third act when we i crawled back over the people who were unfortunate enou<;h to have aisle seats. Shannon Fife Was Johnny on the Spot While Shannon Fife was stationcd at Camp Travis, Texas, he received this tek-gram from Edwin C.'arcwe, of the Metro.: "Try a story for Halc Ham? ilton." Tho army ban against enlisted men selling their stuff had been liftcd, so Fife set to work and produeed | "Johnny on tho Spot" in a few hours. It will be Mr. Hamilton's next rcleaso.
