Earnings for Six Months Are $5.95 Well in Excess of Custom-, ary 8 Per Cent Dividend Rate, Says Thayer; Rec? ord Growth Is Expected Earnings of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company for the first half of tho present year were well in excess of the company'3 customary 8 per cent dividend rate, according to the statement for the six months ended June 30 issued by H. B. Thayer, presi? dent, yesterday. The surplus after charges and Fed? eral taxes was $26,323,663, equivalent to $5.95 a share earned on the $441,981,200 capital stock. No comparison was available with the corresponding period of last year, as the lines were under Federal control at that time, but for the six months ended June 30, 1917, the period just prior to government con? trol, tho balance after dividends was $3,756,100, as compared with S8,646,320 for the six months period just closed. Regarding business conditions ?Mr. Thayer said- in his announcement: "The company has retrently received in full from the United States Treas? ury the balance due the Bell System for operations under Federal control, in accordance with the settlement set forth in the annual report. "Adjustment to conditions arising from and following the war is pro? ceeding more rapidly than we would have dared to hope. "Since January 1 the Bell System has already added over 808,000 stations. This is a new high record, and in ad? dition there are over 200,000 unfilled orders for station installations In ex cesB of normal. These stations are be? ing installed as rapidly as possible in view of the present difficulties of pro? duction and transportation. Provided materials can be obtained and installed, present indications are that this year will show the greatest growth in busi J ness in the history of the Bell System." Western Union Earnings Net Income Equivalent to $6.97 a Share The Western Union Telegraph Com? pany reported yesterday a net income after charges for the six months ended June 30 of $6,954.000, equal to $6.97 a share on the $99,786,727 capital stock. Has Bargain, Wants Another Question? Please give your opinion of Nfa?r York, West ehester * Boston 4% per rent bonds. I havo one, aftfl if you con ,' j; ? good speculative Investment Should ik? to buy ??n(>ther- * nav* ?>een Informed that they aro Investment bar? gains and that even in the event, of re? ceivership tho Interest would be safe. I should also like to have your opinion of Cities Service Bankets shares. I have read'-where you said they were very spec? ulative; however, I am willing to take a chance If there la a fair prospect of their continuing to pay dividends?Mrs. C. B. S. Answer?New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad guarantees the principal and interest of the New York, Westchester & Boston 4% per cent bonds. As long as the New Haven pays the coupons the bonds are most attractive. The road itself has never paid, in some years operating expenses not even being earned. The road was very expensively built and the development of the territory through which it runs has been dis? appointing, we think. What the rail? roads generally will be able to do tinder the new legislation is something time only will tell. If you feel able to speculate apon the future, that is New Haven's ability to continue the pay? ment of the interest, we believe you stand a good chance of being re? warded. We consider Cities Service Bankers shares speculative because they are sensitive to earning power of the company. We would not attempt to forecast the dividend policy of the company, which is largely engaged in the production of petroleum. Room for a Shock Absorber .Question? Please give me an opinion on Anaconda Copper, B. F. Ooodrlch, Repub? lic Iron and Steel and Southern Pacific Railroad. Also do you think Crucible Steel preferred and B. F. Good'rtch pre? ferred fairly safe 7?W. F. B. I Answer? The four common issues you m.ntion are highly speculative and usually fall in with the general stock market trend. All have merit in vary? ing degrees. Unless you are prepared to speculate and to receive shocks from time to time we advise you to shun tnem. Both Crucible Steel preferred and Goodrich preferred are entitled to good investment ratings, in our opin? ion. Good Non-Railroad Bondi Question?Kindly advise when United States Rubber Company 6s terminate. Also give a list of a few long time bonds (not railroads) that you consider Just as high grade as United States Rubber Com? pany 6s that 'will give a larger yield? E. M. S. Answer?United States Rubber 5 per cents mature in 1947. At present price the actual yearly income is 6% per cent. Other good industrial issues are Illinois Steel 4% per cent, 1940; Bush Terminal consolidated 5 per cent, 1955; American Telephone and Telegraph collateral 5 per cent, 1946; New York Dock first 4 per cent, 1951. Afraid of I. ? C. I. P. A P. j Question?I own 100 shares of United States Ir?n Pipe preferred stock. Am in? formed that during 1919 tho company'not only failed to earn its bond interest but closed with deficit of some $600,000/ and, th;tt since the bond interest and preferred dividends of $600.000 were paid In 1919 the aggregate deficit for the year equalled over $1,000,000 and the remaining Bur plus approximately $360,000. In view of these facts (If facts they are) I was think? ing it would be a good plan to sell at about 4 3 and purchase at about 86, 60 shares American Agricultural Chemical Common, paying 8 per cent, which would bring $400 a year Interest of $600, but would be perhaps a better Investment In the lonjr run.?T. G. G. Answer? The operations of the U. S. Cast Iron Pipe and Foundry Company for 1919 were substantially as you de? scribe. What the company will report for 1920 remains to be seen. If you feel that you do not care to speculate upon th?3 matter it would be better to invest in some security of a company whose earning power is ample to care for dividend and interest charges over a period of years. American Agri? cultural Chemical is speculative also, in our opinion, because the common stock is highly sensitive to earning power. We think for investment pur? poses you had better consider only good bonds as high grade preferred stocks. Thinks Prices Are Lqw Question?Would like to have your com? ments on the following: Pennsylvania Sea? board Steel, around $25 per share; Wabash preferred "A," around $22; Tropical Oil, at about $20. They are all speculative, of course, but I particularly refer to possi? bility of dividends, general stability and financial worth and whether present prices are about as low as might be expected.? F. L. P. Answer ?On account of the depres? sion in the stock market most securi? ties are perhaps in a better technical position than for some time past; but we cannot say that present prices are about as low as may be expected. High? ly speculative issues such as you men? tion may be affected by all manner of developments. All have possibilities of various sorts, the railroad stock being largely dependent upon the operation of the road urlder the new legislation. We do not attempt to give advice on speculation. If a man enters into it he should be prepared for all sorts of hap? penings. Widow's Investments Are Good Question?Kindly give ma your opin? ion of the Central States Electric Corpora? tion, of which I have 30 shares preferred. I am a widow and seem to have no way of learning anything about them?Mrs. W. D'. M. Answer? While the Central States Electric Corporation preferred stock is not high gTade, it appears to be a fair investment. The Fort Worth Power and Light preferred and the Union Electric Light and Power bonds are both good investments, in our opinion. Apprehensive About Coal Shares .
