Answer?American Smelting and Re?
fining Company did not earn ?ta com?
mon dividend during 1919 and was
forced to go into surplus account to
pay tho -I per cent. However, this sur?
plus is large and this was the first time
! that tho company has been in such ??
i position for many years, if indeed il
? has ??ver had to do so before. The pre?
ferred dividend was earned by a fair
margin. The General "Cigar Company
has shown satisfactory earnings. Dur
ing 1919 the surplus after payment of
7 per cent on the prefi rred si i
two payments of 1% per cent each on
the debenture preferred stock and 5
per rent on the common stock was $1,
384,845, the largest in tho company's
i history. We regard the debenture stock
i as a very fair investment. The other
i issues you mention are of varying de
j grees of safety. Wo do not advise the
; purchase of American Sumatra or of
I Chandler Motors for Investment. The
: Swiss bonds and United States Steel
: preferred are entitled to good rating at
present.
