If anything, this part of the market un? derwent a further broadening and the buying was sufficiently well sus? tained to establish many of the leaders at new high prices for the year. Trading in the rails, in fact, ; supplied the largest bulk of the turn | over, buying orders coming into the S market in heavy volume over the wires I of commission houses. ? ' The bear party, of late actively en ? gaged in selling industrial stocks for ; the decline, ceased their efforts to depress values, 30 that this part of ? the market also shared in the general j improvement. Steel common gave an i impressive display of strength, ad? vancing at one time above 90, but eas? ing off before the V:lose on profit taking. Elsewhere in the industrial list substantial advances were scored,. I with a number of the lower priced oils, j like Sinclair and Transcontinental, es? pecially prominent. Even the motor I shares, which have lately been sub 1 j?cted to a great deal of special pres? sure, came through with,a substantial reepvery. The improvement in the whole industrial group appeared to be a result of the rise in the rails which has created a better feeling all around and has been an important factor in discouraging bear operations. In the railroad department, invest? ment issues like Union Pacific, South? ern Pacific, Atchison, New York Cen? tral, Norfolk & Western, Northern Pacific and Great Northern preferred were among the leaders. The largest volume of activity came in the lower priced rails, however, issues that have attractive speculative possibilities in view of the advances in freight and passenger rates just made effective. The Erie, New Haven, St. Louis South? western, Southern Railway, Norfolk Southern and Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific were among the issues in this group which appeared to be in greatest favor. A further lowering of the call money rate helped sentiment. Borrowers at the Stock Exchange were able in the afternoon to cover the immediate need at 6 per cent. Renewals had been made at 8 per cent, with a de? cline in the rate by mid-day to 7 per cent. Semi-official announcement that upwarB of $50,000,000 in gold is about to be shipped to this country on French account in connection with the Anglo-French loan maturity next ?month was looked upon as a most im? portant development. This gold will be of great value in sweetening up bank reserves. Money and Credit After renewals had been negotiated en a basis of ?? per cent yesterday, the cal? loan rata dropped to 6 per cent in the afternoon. Yester- Year day. ago. I -: The Dollar in Foreign Exchange ? Sterling was a shade rasier yester ! day, and francs and lire were slightly i lower. The volume of trading was thin, i end the lack of forward ?>uying is at? tributed mainly to the tightness of i credit. Some bankers are of the opin ! ion that buying of dollars in anticipa ! tion of the Anglo-French maturity has ? been the main force contributing to the ? depression of the European exchanges, ? and that purchasing is now practically completed, it is understood. In Wall Street Who Control! St. Louis ft Sooth western? In the gossip of the Street yesterday it was reported that a change of con-' trol has taken place in recent weeks in the St. Louis & Southwestern Railroad system. Both the common and pre? ferred shares of the company have i lately given an exhibition of pro? nounced strength which has set the | gossip mongers to work. Yesterday j the preferred sold at the highest price i of the year, touching a point close to 40, cpmpared with a low in June of 21*4.1 The current price of the common in the 20's compares with a June low of 11. I Edwin Gould is chairman of the board, i and if the story is true it means that ? the Gould control has passed from the j last of the several systems at oneotime held by the Gould family. It was not | possible yesterday to get any confirma- ! tion of the report. The annual meet? ing of the stockholders is scheduled to j h?? held the first Tuesday in October. It was recalled yesterday that the con- ! trol of the Missouri Pacific, formerly ! controlled by the Gould family, passed in the open market several years ago. j ?Etna Plan Held Up The plan for the retirement at $12 a ; share of part of the outstanding stock ; of the .rEtna Explosives Company is re- I ported to be temporarily held up. The j program has not, however, been entirely ? dropped, and will in all probability be ? revived in about six weeks, it was learned. Rail Executives Meet The railroad offices of the city were yesterday depleted of chief executives, who have gone to Chicago to attend a meeting to-day of the member roads of the Association of Railway Execu? tives. Nin?ty-five per ce,nt of the country's railroad syste?is will bc?jrep resented at the conference, at w,hich problema confronting the roads will be taken up. The labor issue will be especially canvassed, it is understood. Exchanges Expected to Improve As soon as France completes buy? ing dollars in the foreign exchange market to create credits to help pay off its share of the Anglo-French loan, which will mature on October 15, the European exchanges will do better, ac? cording to a view expressed by several leading operators* in the exchange market, who attribute the summer depression in the exchange mart main? ly to international operations in con? nection with the big maturity. France has evidently been buying dollars by selling sterling to some extent. The State of the Motors ! In connection with the severe read justment of the automotive ' industry j which has taken place since June i there have been many contradictory j reports. Many of them have been i unrelated fo the true situation. The : actual state of the industry will prob- , ably be accurately set forth at* the annual credit convention of the Motor and Accessory Manufacturers' Associa? tion, which will be hold at Cleveland on September 16, 17 and 18. Employees as Investors i Employees of the Westarn Electric Company took a large block of the is Kue of five-year 7 per cent convertible b'inds recently offered, according to an announcement made yesterday. In all ' 57-1 employees, representing investors in each of the fort, -two branches of the concern, took bund?; of th?? new is su# fitrirrcp-it Jntr a rar value of ap? proximately $2 000,000. The sale to the employees was made on an installment basis, payment bcin^ made on a sched? ule s.m lar to that used during the Liberty Loan drives. Interest is allowed to the subscribers on the money they : pay in and also on the bonds them? selves, so that instead of paying the full subscription price of $9^.50, the empl'-yoi' investor'.? cf>st i? only ? ?*? 8-1 on each $100 bond. It is figured that during the time the are paying for their bonds the employees will receive a not return of 0 y per e nt n year, and that after completing their payments in May, 1922, nnd until the redemption at par on April 1, 1925, the annual in? terest on their investment will amount to 8..3 per cent a year, an average of 8.7 per cent for the entire five years. ... Maxwell-Chalmers Plan Near A r^ew plan for the merger of the Maxwell and Chalmers automobile companies in a way that will produce the needed capital has been formu? lated, and a public announcement is j imminent. The reported program pro? vides for the creation of a new com? pany, the stock of which will be ex- ! changed for the outstanding Maxwell : and Chalmers stock, and also offere/1 i to the public for subscription. In the new company it is said that there will i be A stock and B stock. The number of shares of the former are said to be 150,000 and those of the latter 600,000. The basis of exchange, it is reported, will call for 50 per cent of Class B stock of the new company for one's holdings of Maxwell first preferred, 25 per cent for Maxwell second preferred and'10 per cent for Maxwell bommon. It was said that Chalmers preferred I will be exchangeable for 60 per cent of ' Class B stock and Chalmers common 25 per cent, leaving the A stock and part of the B available for sale to the : public. It was rumored .that purchas- \ ers of A stock would get a substantial l bonus in B stock. It is hoped to raise ? $15,000,000 in this way. Getting Ready for French Loan The stage is being set for a new French loan. An announcement of the terms of the new operation will prob? ably be made early next week. Bond men expect an improved market after Labor Day, and it is evident that the bankers have timed the new loan ac? cordingly. The first gold shipment from France will leave Havre to-mor? row, nnd the large ?ow that will fol? low will probably appeal to the imagi? nation of investors and heighten confi? dence in French credit.
