Building Combines To Remain Intact,, Says Employer Aid j "-I ? W. G. Webber Asserts Con-. tractiiigOrgaiiizationsWill function Despite Opposi? tion; Untermyer May Act ? ?p, 0.'Webbor. secretary of the f \'?ti'onal Building Trades Employers' I ygociation, declared last night that ? ', pit? t|jC strenuous efforts that have [ ??ri made by certain agencies to break ( nn various contracting organizations in | ?he tmilding industry these would re- i main intact. He was referring ostensibly to the I war waged by the Lockwood committee ?n housing against numerous bodies of ?ontractors in the building trades who Ure alleged to be operating in viola? tion of the Donnelly anti-trust laws. Many of these organizations, like the Masons' Supply Bureau, of Brooklyn; the Cnt Stone Contractors' Association i und the sand producers, had announced ' their dissolution or their intention of i .lisbantiing after charges had be..'n i brought against them by Samuel Unter a>er. chief counsel for the Loekwood ?o'mmittec. ..... There were intimations last night ?hat Mr. Untermyer would take cog? nizance of Mr. Webber's assertion when the committee resumes its in-1 vestigation on April 25 and make an effort to lind out if the organizations ?h?t had promised to disband had car- i ried out their pledges. Mr. Webber was speaking at a meet- \ ?jig of about seventy-live representa- j tires of the various trades in the ? building industry who had gathered at the National Republican Club's head-j quarters. M West Fortieth .Street, to i form a New York district branch of I the National Congress of Building! and Construction Industry. Branches already have been established in many : cities throughout the country for the; purpose of britiRing about closer co- ? operation tti a vigorous effort to revive j activity in the industry. A committee ? of forty was appointed t? go ahead ] with the completion -of the organiza- ; tion. The body will include all phases of the industry'- Hugh Frayne, local or? ganizer for the American Federation of Labor; Otto M. Eidlitz, a former official of the Building Trades Employers' As? sociation: Burt Fesncr, well known architect; Paul Starret, contractor, and Walter Stabler, of tho Metropolitan Life Company, are some of the men r.amed on the committee on organiza? tion. HGgh Frayne, speaking for labor, said that the formation of the confer? ence would solve the local problem by bringing about complete understanding of the various elements of the trade. "We are not going to make the excuse that labor has been wholly free from blame," he said, "and if there is any? thing to fix in this phase of the indus? try the remedy will be properly ap? plied." ? Fire in Republican Club i Damage estimated at between $30,000 and $50,000 was caused yesterday morning by fire that burned out the in? terior of the 22d Assembly District Re? publican Club, at 236 Barbey Street. Brooklyn. William Spencer, the steward, and ?rs. Mary Mcraagh, his assistant, had noms on the third floor. They were inkened by shouts in the street and .'tones thrown against their room win? dows, and were assisted to the roof of j a two-story extension. They climbed | down ladders placed against the build- j ing by firemen of Truck 107. Jacob A. Livingston, Republican leader of Brooklyn, is head of the club. He arrived before the fire was extin? guished. The origin o? the blaze is unknown. Derailed Car Blocks Subway Southbound traffic on the Inter borough subway was interrupted for an hour late yesterday afternoon when the forward car of a ten-car train was derailed entering the Seventy-second Street station. Officials say that the forward trucks of the leading car jumped the rails and the train was brought to an im? mediate stop by emergency brakes.
