Directors Set Up Reserves of More Than $15,000, 000 to Care for Losses in South American Business Charles H. Sabin, president of the Guaranty Trust Company of New York, announced yesterday that the directors of th? Institution had reduced the dividend on the stock from a 20 per cent a year basis to 12 per cent. A letter sent by the board to the stockholders of the trust company an? nouncing the dividend cut ami accom? panying: the statement of condition as of condition as September G laut says that all realised losses have heretofore been charged off, and to anticipate .nny other possible losses extraordinary re? serves of approximately $15,250,000 have been set up. The latest statement of condition, out to-day, shows capital, surplus and un? divided profits aggregating $41,131.464, compared with $55,545,372 reported in the previous call, as of Juno 30 last. The surplus fund, which etood at $25,000,000 on June 30 has been re? duced to $15,000,000, while undivided profits have been cut from $5,545,372 to $1,131,464. The formal statement issued to the stockholders by the board, us a result of action taken on Thursday, follows: "Your directors have unanimously voted a dividend for the quarter end? ing September 30 of 3 per cent, this contrasting with 5 per cent quarterly that has been paid for some years. "Your directors have heretofore charged off nil realized losses, but in addition, in order to anticipate any other posible losses, have now bg\ up an extraordinary reserve of approxi? mately $15.250,000, charging such re? serve itemA against the company's sur? plus and undivided profits accounts. The company's statement thus shows capital, surplus and undivided profits of $41,131,46-1. These figures have been arrived at by the directors, in con? sultation with leading authorities, after exhaustive examination, and make com? plete allowance for all accounts concern? ing which question has been raised. These include losses that may be sus? tained from banking operations in Central and South America, where the shrinkage in the value of customers' loans, due to the unprecedented fall in the price of commodities and the fluctuation in exchange- have been ex? cessive. "The company's current earnings (before charge-offs) for the nine months ending September 30 will be in excess of $5,000,000, the total divi- ; dend requirements for the year at the former rate, but your directors have ? adopted the conservative course, first j setting up immediately ample reserves ? against all its known or _ potential j losses, and, second, at this time mak- j ing a certain reduction in its dividend j distribution, so as to devote a greater ? portion of its earnings than heretofore j to the increase of its surplus fund." The dividends at the reduced rate are j payable October 1 to stockholders of record September 21. The reference in the formal state- j ment explaining the action of the di? rectors with regard to writing off losses on Central and South American banking operations has to do with the trust company's investment in the ?Mer? cantile Bank of the Americas, Inc., which suffered severely as a result of the collapse of the commodity markets. The committee of bankers in charge of the affairs of the Mercantile Bank of the Americas, Inc.. has decided, it was announced yesterday, to close its Cuban branch. Whether the institution is to be wound up and liquidated has not yet been decided. A banker in close tonch with the affairs of the Mer? cantile Bank of the Americas said yes? terday what is to be done in this mat? ter will depend upon circumstances. The condensed statement of the con? dition of the Guaranty Trust Company of New York as of September 6. com? pared with that of June 30 last, fol? lows: Sept. 6, 1921. June 80, 1921. Recovery in Japanese Trade Shown in August WASHINGTON, Sept. 16. ? Market revival m both the exports and im? ports of Japan during August fol? lowed the pronounced slump in that country's foreign trade during July, according to a cable to the Commerce Department to-day from Trade Com? missioner Butts at Tokio. Exports, which' dropped frqm ap? proximately $5,'.,000,000 during June to $40,000,000 for July, the commis? sioner reported, returned to $52,000, 000 for August, which compares with $87,000,000 during August, 1920. Im? ports, which declined from $74,000, 000 for Juno to 595,000,000 for July, rose again to $65,000.000 during Au? gust, which was even greater than the $61,000,000 total during August, 1920. The excess of imports over exports for the eight months of this year, the commissioner said, is $131,000,000, as against $215,1)00,000 for the same period last year. During August the exports of cop? per continued to be exceedingly large and the silk shipments showed an in? crease, but the exports of tea, cotton yarn and textiles continued to be com? paratively light, while the most notable gains among the import items were ?n cotton and machinery. If the bond is selling below par you must allow also for the < ition of the principal. To do this the market quotation from par, and divide the remainder by the number of years the bond has to run be naturlty. Fir example, u a 6 per cent bond Is selling at 50 and ha.? t-n .. run, the annual return will bo ? cent. The difference between pur and the market price will bo 10 points. ? ' -, Ing M from ?00. Dividing ten points by ten years the quotient will be 1. This figure is to be added to 6.66, which : is the annual return, and the result, 7.66 per cent, will give you the approximate yield.
