Arrested Naval Officer's Wife, Shot, Thoat Cut and Head Al? most Severed, Found on, Kitchen Floor of Home Accused Under Guard Children of V i c t i m in Bed When Murder at Colonial Beach Occurs Sp?cial Dispatch to The Tribune COLONIAL BEACH, Va., Sept. 30. With n bullet in her brain, her throat. cut with a razor and her head almost severed from her body with a hatchet, the body of Mrs. Roger Eastlake, wife of Roger Eastlake, a naval officer sta? tioned at the Dahgren Naval Station, a short distance from Colonial Beach, was found on the kitchen Moor of her home early this morning. The woman's husband and Miss Sarah M. Knox, the latter of Philadelphia, are held for the crime. They were taken to the ounty jjail to-night for safekeeping. Miss Knox was the first person to find the body. She said she slept in a house near the Eastlake residence last night and awoke early this morning. She went, to the Eastlake home and j found Mrs. Eastlake dead on the kitchen floor. She notified the police and the woman's husband. Eastlake says he left home about 5:30 o'clock this morning, and his wife was well then, lie says she prepared breakfast for him, The Eastlakes have two children. They told the police they heard a noise downstairs, and when they came out rr their room their father told them to go back to bed. The children say their frther said their i mother was hurt. I Miss Knox came to Colonial Beach about a year ago, soon after the East lukes moved here, and visited the East lakes. Later Mrs. Eastlake is said to have asked her to leave. She went away, but returned and again visited the Eastlakes. Mrs. East- j lake said she was afraid of the wc.nan.j neighbors said to-day. Tne police found a blood-s.ained pis? tol, a hatchet with blood on the handle and blcody clothing in the Eastlake j home. They also found a raincoat, said to ?lelong to Miss Knox, in the dining 100m of the Eastlake home. This also had blood stains on it, the police say. There were blood spots on Miss Knox's clothing, but the woman haul they probably were made when she saw Mrs. Eastlake lying dead on the floor and she tried to help her. Eastlake and Miss Knox were heav? ily guarded after a coroner's jury charged them with killing Mrs.' East lake. There is strong feeling against the pair here, and they were hurried away to the county jail under strong guard. Development of Race of Supermen Suggested Professor Says Godlike Bodies and Newton Minds Could Be Produced on Island Special Pinpa'cli to The. Tribune BALTIMORE, Sept. 30.?Dr. H. S. Jennings, professor of zoology at Johns Hopkins University, expressed belief to-day that a race of people with the bodies of Greek gods and the minds of Newton or Shakespeare could be developed if a group of selected men and women were put on an island, otherwiso uninhabited and kept there j with their descendants for many generations. I "Of course," Dr. Jennings admitted, "that isn't possible, because the gen? erations of the human race are too 1 long, and we might not be successful ! in obtaining subjects. We can, how? ever, improve the race by scientific methods, making the people healthier, better looking and more intelligent. "Great men are both horn and made, Heredity and environment both have their effect, so the race may be changed ? by selection of the parents of the fu? ture and by a change in surroundings ; In a group of men placed under exactlj ' identical conditions those with superioi ! ancestors would soon come to the j front, while, a ?ew men of eijuallj good descent will soon show the effects 1 of variations in evironment." nrmniMinniniiii 1?L s #i ^?< w?m i.ri j Mt?j$? ?ti " ? \ t??
