The seasonal spirit as measured by dollars dir-trihuted to the rank and file of employees who make up the great bulk of the district's popu? lation ii not running so high as during the period of war prosperity or even a year ago, when depression hsd taken a grip upon tho business and souls of the community. Blasted hopes are chiefly the portion of the employees of brokerage houses, although as the weeks passed and no active trading developed, their expecta? tions had been modified. Some firms are paying bonuses, but where a dis? tribution has been made, it has gon erally been below the amount allotted to this purpose in 1920. Typical of the reduction is the fixing of the bonus to officers and employees of the New York Stock Exchange at 4% per cent. A year ago they received 10 pr-r cent of their annual salaries. Employees of banking institutions j and houses and investment concerns have fared better. This is due, first, j to the improvement in the business of basks following the passing of the worsfl uncertainty at mid-year, and second, to the prosperity of* bond de? partments and bond houses. , Morgan & Co. Bonos J. P. Morgan <fr Co. are planning a distribution to their employees in line with custom, but, as usual, the amount is not announced nor is a comparison with last year's bonus indicated. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is expected to give some seasonal bonus to its employees, although it also adheres to a policy of no announce? ment on the subject. The distribution will probably be smaller than a year ago, when and if approved by the proper authorities. The National Bank of Commerce has paid a bonus approximating that paid a year ago. The Bankers Trust Com? pany ia distributing to employees, as tn 1920, 6 per cent of their annual salaries. The Guaranty Trust Company. which for the last three years has maintained a profit-sharing plan ob? viating a bonus,, is this year giving employees, officers excluded, 2% per cent of their annual salaries. The same ratio applies to the Guaranty Company. The National City Bank, which a year ago distributed 5 per cent to its employees, is not expected to pay a bonus. It holds to the theory that employees should be paid on a salary basis strictly according to their warth. and indicated in 1920 that the practice of Christmas distributions would be discontinued. Amonnts Sam? as 1920 Among the investment banking houses the payments made a year ago are generally duplicated. Such repre? sentative firms as Dillon, Read & Co. * and Harris, Forbes & Co. have followed ! this precedent. Bonuses announced yesterday in i eluded 10 per cent of the annual snl ; nries to officer? and employees of th# Lincoln Trust Company, "additions! compensation" of 15 per cent to officers and employees of t h ?^ United States Mortgage and Trust Company. j Employees of R. M. Grant & Co. will receive the usual bonus, based on their annual salari?*s and on a sliding scale according to length of service. Those with the firm for two years or more will receive over 10 per cent of their yearly salaries. Hemphill, Noyes & Co., in addition to insuring the lives of their employees and guaranteeing an arrangement whereby in the encouragement, of thrift employees are obtaining from 15 to 20 per cent on their savings, are distrib? uting a Christmas bonus of 10 per cent of salarie-.*, and 2 per cent for each ad? ditional year of service. No Exchange Celebration The Stock Exchange, contrary- to its usual custom, will not hold a Christ? mas celebration this year on account of the construction work that is being done on the new annex at the corner of Wall and Broad streets. Because ot the demolition of the old Wall Street entrance one can now enter the ex? change only on Broad Street, and it was feared that the congestion would be too great if an attempt were made to handle the crowd of relatives and friends of the exchange employees whe usually attend these functions. Preparations were being completed yesterday for a big jollification botr on the Consolidated Exchange and th? new Curb Market Exchange. Thf Produce Exchange will not have it: Yuletide celebration until New Year's when the usual circus stunts will bi presented to the poor children south o: Canal Street. Business on the Curl Exchange will cease at 11 o'clock to day so as to permit everything to be it readiness for the afternoon's festivi ties. ?Sold in Demand The United States Sub-Treasury am the banks have been doing a rushinj business in gold pieces all week to fii the holiday demand. Mcjpt of the call have been for the 52.50 denomination but the limited supply at the Sub Treasury waa exhausted by Thursda morning. Eagles, double eagles an half eagles are more plentiful, practi cally all the banks paying them cut o demand. As a general rule Stock Exchang firms have been fail!;/ liberal with en ployees, but not to the extent of som more prosperous preceding year: Some houses are basing the extra yeai pnd compensation on length and fait! fulness of service. Bonuses apply pai ticularly to those firms which have lai off a substantial number of clerks du* ing the last year. Where lay-offs hat not been the general rule few bonus? have, been distributed. average canal improvement 3 per cent bonds. Subscriptions to the $30,000,000 American Sugar Refining Company is? sue were well in excess of the amount offered. No formal announcement of ailotrnents is to be made. U. S. Boston Wool Market BOSTON, Dec. 23.?"The Commer? cial Bulletin" to-morrow will say: "The demand fof woo! this week has been of fair proportions, due in part to specu? lation on the part of dealers, but also in considerable measure to piecing-out orders from the mills, which meet the advanced prices reluctantly. A Good Investment Question?"Would you advise the Northern State? Power 1st 5s. Serlos A, due 1941, aa a conservative Investment for a woman o? about sixty v?,ir? of ng?. and can you fur? nish n-.e with nom?-- detail? as to th? secur? ity back of the bond and the business ut tho company7?-A. O, 34, Answer?Northern States Power first and refunding 5s are aeenred by a Hen, cither direct or h y the deposit of tho entire outstanding: issues o? bonds and stock, on all of the property of the company. The total amount of the bonds under this mortgage, includ? ing both 6s and 6s, is $27,5tt7,500, and then- are $7,323.000 prior lion?! out? standing. The properties of the sys? tem supply electric light and power to some 290 communities in Minnesota North Dakota. South Dakota, Wiscon-? sin, Iowa and Illinois. In lf?20 the Company, earned more than double its interest charges. We think the bonds a good investment. For a Small Inheritance Question?f have just Inherited 85 200 and would appreciate it. if you would give me a list of safo bonds to vieid 6% per cent or better. I pee you speak of a Hy dro-e.ectric or Power bond, which would Pay a higher per cent and be-equally safo and what is your opinion of tho Queens? land bond???nias G. v.*. Answer?-Wo think highly of State of Queensland 7 per cent bonds which, at the present market prices, yield about ' 6% per cent current interest. The yield to maturity is a little less, be? cause the bonds are selling ai a premium, recently at 108%, but you I can offset this by putting part of your I money in:.o lower coupon rate bonds j selling at. a discount We suggest j Colorado A Southern refunding and ' extension 4%a. due 1935, recently sell? ing at 84%, which gives you about o?i ' per cent if held to maturity. Among j the hydro-electric bonds that, yield ohi per cent or over, we suggest Puget I Sound Power and Light 7%_, due 1941, recently selling around par, and Con- ! nect cut Light and Power first refund-' ing 7s, due 1951, recently selling at al little below par. For the fifth bond we i suggest New York Telephone 6s, due | 1941. and recently* selling around par. I With the $200 we suggest the. purchase . of two shares of American Locomotive ! preferred stock. It will be necessary ! to add $20 or so to the $200 to make up the purchase prier. At present prices the stocks will average 7 29 ??ni the bondi? about 6.44. Do you think this list Is reasonably ta.f-- or would you sug? gest a change1?S Answer? In our opinion it would be more conservative to buy Baldwin Lo? comotive preferred arid American Car and Foundry preferred in place of Southern Pacific and Illinois Centrai stock. The other investments you sug? gest are high grade, in our opinion. Pure Oil Questloi ?1 am Inclosing herewith an Is-* sue offered concerning the Pure Oil Co. preferred stock, and would ask you if you kindly ad lae me as to the sound? ness of these stocks as an investment, and not as speculative??O. O. Answer? In oui opinion Pur? Oil convertible 8 per cent cumulative pre? ferred stock is a good business man's investment. You can see for yourself that in each of the four vears ended March 31. 1918, 1919. 1920 and 1921, the company has earned many times over its dividend requirements on the pre? ferred. Rarit?t! I would ! like to hare the bonds in ?mal? denomina? tions. If the bonds I have listed ?re net \ issued in small denominations, would you recommend some to rue that are.' ? R. A. C. Answer? There is a ecrtain amount | of speculation involved in United States ; Rubber first preferred under present circumstance-, we think, and Phrla- ? delphia Company stock is somewhat speculative. The Pennsylvania Rail- \ road 7s come in $F>00 denominations | only, as do also the United States Rub- \ ber T^s mot 7s). You would be more j conservativa if you bought $500 of the I Pennsylvania 7a and only $100 of the Goodyear Tire, which come in $100 de? nominations. Colorado & Southern 4V_3, due 1934, come in 3100 denomina? tions and are a good investment, in our opinion. M, K. & T. 4s Question?3hould an Investor who has $1 000 Missouri. Kansas & Texas first 4s. 1990, and $1,000 Missouri, Kansas * Texas second 4s. 1990, ksep his bonds or seil them or accept the exchange offered by the re? organization, if he la concerned for rea? sonable safety In this, say 2 per cent of his diversified holdings? I have read the plan of reorganization, but am not much helped In* it Only the Inclosed announce? ment from the first mortgage committee In making 'he choice which, as they sageiy sav, 'it esanntially one for the individua: bcmdholder."?C. H. H. Answer? We advise you to exchange your first mortgage Missouri, Kansas & Texas 4s, and in your case, since you arc a holder of both first and second 4s, to exchange the second 4s also. The plan, in our opinion, is favorable to the first 4s and rather unfavorable to the second 4s, but we believe that your in? terest, being a holder of both, would lie in seeing the plan go through and your investments would then again be? come a regular interest-earning invest? ment. r--;-'-;?!
