Business News Improvement in Agriculture In Mid-West Encouraging Corn and Wheat Situation Better, Says Chicago Re? serve Hank; NolJncmploy- ; ment Increase Last Month | CHICAGO, Pec. 27. - Encouraging reports from the agricultural sections of tho Seventh Federal Reservo Dis? trict indicate considerable Improve? ment during November in credit, con? ditions, according to the monthly re? view of business conditions to bo is? sued by the Chicago Federal Reserve' Bank on December 81. "Corn is moving to tho market rapidly for this time of tho year," says the review, "arid wheat is re? ported in good condition. Advances in corn prices have given encouragement. "lloliiiiiy trade started fairly well early this month, although some re? ports indicnto a falling off in dollar sales from last year. The factory situation in some parts of the dis? trict is unfavorable. While orders re? ceived are a little better, collections have not been made, thus causing a heavy demand for carrying largo, in? ventories and finished goods." The total volume of employment in manufacturing industries in tho dis? trict was fairly constant in November, with fluctuations, however, in indi? vidual groups. Iron and steel in? creased 8,8 per cent. Other increases were made in other metals, leather and leather products. The heaviest do croases were in automobiles and ac? cessories, stone, clay and cement. Average earnings declined about 5 per cent for the month. Commercial Credit Tho commercial money markets j opened the new week with little change j from last week. Commercial paper was quiet, with rates on the basis of 5 peri cent for the best primo paper. The j bulk of paper in the market is now of] this character. Mosessohn, executive director of the Associated Dress Industries of America, has given dress manufac? turers an indication of what is wanted and at what prices the pub? lic will buy. "The first three weeks of Decem? ber," he said, "showed a material increase in retail volume, and natu? rally a much larger turn-over of merchandise than during the same period last year. Medium priced goods constituted the bulk of pur? chasing, with, of course, somo of the lower and higher priced mer? chandise moving in smaller per? centages. Women shopped and se? lected values.. This tendency was not so apparent last year, and not at all the year before. "Women will buy, so there is no fear for 1922. Women want value and they must get it." which was established a year ago to stabilize trafile in precious stones, has done an enormous business, according to a report issued to-day. The report showed a substantial isicrease in busi? ness despite the loss of South African raw materials and claims that Berlin is becoming recognized as a strong competitor of Antwerp and Amsterdam in this field. According to the report, '2,000,000 Dutch guilders and 5,000,000 French francs have passed through the Reichsbank to cover turn-overs of the diamond bourse. Four times this amount, says the report, has passed through other banks, the government collecting 200,000 marks on 1,1,000,000 marks' worth of business done by four foreigners in eight weeks alone. Foreigners are permitted member? ship in tho bourse only under excep? tional circumstances. Trading goes on practically all day, and prices during fluctuations in tli,o value of the mark usually vary from 20,000 to 45,000 marks a carat. Many stones, known to have come from Russia, have beea handled by the bourse.
