Aro they safe, or too speculative?? M. D. N. Answer? The Eastern Cuba Sugar Corporation TVs per cent bonds aro no better than a business 3nan's in? vestment, despite their mortgage se? curity and the guaranty of the Cuba Cane Sugar Corporation. This is a new company entering the sugar business at a time when the industry was in an uncertain condition, snd the credit rat? ing of the borrower is fairly reflected in the fact that the 7% per cent coupon rate was necessary at ? time when first grade mortgage bonds are selling to yield 5 per ??ent or less, and the addi? tional fact that to this attractive in? terest! rato the company was com? pelled to add an option to purchase Cuba Cane Sugar common stock at $20 ft share. This bond may have specu? lative attractiveness due to the con? version privilege, but it is certainly not an investment for any one who can? not afford to assume the attendant risk. There are no arrears of dividends on the 7 per cent stock. The G per cent stock is entitled to 6 per cent dividends In preference to the common. After 6 per cent has been paid on this stock and on the cnminon, both issues share alike in any further distribution. No dividends have ever been paid on the 6 per cent stock. The company has a funded debt of $38,783,000. Its prop? erty and security account was carried at $49,057,000 in the last balance sheet.
