Prominent members of the Nineteenth Cen
tury Club had a I good deal to say yesterday
about the resignation from the club of Judge
Barrett n VIcoPrealdent following that of aIr
Andrew Carnegie Mr Carnegie and Judge
Barrett say that they resigned because of
President Courtlandt Palmers utterances on
to sentences of the Chicago Anarchists
Mr Courtlandt Palmer told a SUN reporter
yesterday nttornoon that tho watchwords of
tho club were toleration fairness and courage
and that Judge Barrett by his resignation
seemingly overlooked tho last of these
In talking to another re porter today said
Mr Pallor I unfortunately made use of the
word cowardly in referring to Judge Bar
retts conduct I was greatly Irritated and I
didnt think what I eld I wish to withdraw
the word wholly and to make Judge Barrett a
nubile apology for the USI of It J confess I
feel hurt at tho flings which Judge Barrett has
thought It necessary to throw out at me and at
the club The policy of tho club has been
from the beginning to remain totally unham
pered Wo dont have any constitution or by
laws even It is only for discussion and stands
committed to no theory and can commit
none of Its members
nlDI to tho Chicago Anarchists I mint sy
that 1 dont believe In the first place that the
Anarchists had a fair trial and that I dont be
hero in the second place Unit it was a politic
tiling to hang thom anyway I am strongly
opposed to anarchy and It seemed to me that
the execution of these men would give anarchy
an Impetus by giving It martyrs This groat
labor movement was likely to bo diverted into
the channel of anarchy I thought and that
would be an awful thing Ihoulht matter of
foot I know of but one other member ef tho
Nineteenth Century Club who thinks upon this
subject a I do And 8 tar as the sessions of
the club being devoted to frivolous matters
now Its absurd Tomorrow night MrQeorge
Sow Putnam Moncuro D Oonwiiy and
Charlton T Lewis will speak on The idea of
Property In Literature That Isnt frivolity Is
I 7 I dont think that those resignations can
affect the club ntall
Mr William Trnvors Jerome the Secretary
of the club corroborated Mr Palmer as to the
impossibility of any ones being committed
by what another member of the club said
her havo joined tho club within tho last
few days said Mr Jerome the Rev Dr

Mary E Tate of Grammar Bchool No 48 and
lots of other prominent people who wouldnt
think of joining an Anarchist orcnriUatlon t
am sure There are not live people in the club
who two in sympathy with Mr Palmers views
about tho Chicago Anarchists and those views
hare boon grossly misrepresented by vewl
pru > 3 Mr John Clinton Gray a lawyer and
nn intimate personal friend Judge Barretts
has followed tho Judges example in resigning
from the club But there wont b any moro
resignations and thoo that have been made
cant injure the prosperity of the club

whether the Doctor has reformed and ha a
the law requires voluntarily abstained from

but not otherwise moving n muscle that If
the plaintiff In this ease has had tho misfortune

When the Court had subdued the laugh that
followed hen Butler said that the only Ques

had reformed he could not lawfully bo longer
restrained of his liberty The Constitution
provided that a man could not be restrained of
his liberty or Ibo full enjoyment of his prop

restrained might luwe a hearing as tho law
provided The Now York law did not make
drunkenness a crime It provided for the rehabilitation

bo pool instead of slxtyono points n In
the old style Froy like every other pool
player professional or nmiUour hag played
games Where his adversary has pocketed
enough balls In the pyramid of fifteen to count
plxtyono points and left unplayed some of tho
prettiest and most difficult shots He consid

give the spectators much more pleasure it Ibo

would give the spectators a chance to sea the
