In to-day's money market of an nttompt to ml

In tho United States, took pnlns early In tho

ho saw no reason to spprohend an uncomfort

To-day's stock mnrketprosentcd sovernl fea

through to tho closo of bulness. Tho
biiylnc was so heavy and persltent that many
experienced brokers enmoto tho rom-luilon
that tho ordors must hnvo orlflnaled at heud
quartcrs. In othor words. Mr. Gould w.is
credited with tho bulk of tho bui'Ins. II be
came current talk that ho had been led to

It Is doubtful If Mr. Gould suspected tho
storm of Indication, somo of it unreasonable,
whloh his proposed policy In relation to Mis
souri Pacific has raised. Hut it l now becom
ing clear that ho has heard tho sounds of that
storm nnd not mistaken their Import. On moro
thnn ono occasion ho has doplored his mis
fortune In druwlng upon himself unwolcomo
attention from the public. As to the future of
Missouri Pacific, whether a dividend Is do
clarod or not, only tho mot reckless of
prophets would vontnro tu Indulge in a
prediction. Ono thine Is certain. Mr. Gould
enn establish u. bettor, in tho sonso
of legitimate, market for It thnn nny ono clso
or than nny combination of circumstances
simply by falling Into lino with tho other rail
ways of tho country and furnishing tho public
with monthly stntomonts of Its gross enrnings
nnd quarterly statements of its operations. Ho
knows by experience, ns well as by obsorui
tlon. thn value of making such repuiK for two
other largo corporations which ho controls,
tho Manhattan Ilnilway and tho Western
Union Telegraph companies, hnvo nlwnys
trentcd their security holders fnlrly in this re
spect. It has been suggested that tho Missouri
Paciflo dividend eplsodo of last week is an ad
ditional argument In favor of further Federal
legislation relntivo to tho management of
railway property. Hut every ono who has
studied tho workings of tho Intor-Stato Com
merce law will dissent from that suggestion,
while Mr. Gould can render It absolutely v.iluo
less by ndoptlng the policy pursued by nearly
every other railway company in the Union. If
ho desires to restore confidence In the property,
that would seem to bo tho most advantageous
course for him to pursue.
While Missouri Pacific wns going down this
morning C B. and Qulney ndnnced to nnd
above par for tho first time In many months.
The dealings In it woro on a lurgo scale, and
though tho cxtremo advnneo was not main
tained. It wns tho only nctrto stock that closed
higher than on Snturdny. Hovers! of tho spe
cialties enjoyed that distinction, notably.
Hocking Valley. Distilling. Tennessee Coal
nnd Iron. National Cordage, nnd Wheeling and
Lake Erie preferred. Lako Shore and
Lackawanna, which wero Inactive, yet
cannot bo described ns specialties, nKo
closed fractionally higher. On tho
other hand, Atchison, which ranked
next to Missouri Paclilc In point of nativity,
nnd Union Pacific, which enmo third, lost
.'' V cent. each. Tho only important declino
was that of l' li cent, in Wabash preferred.
In which tho transactions woro larger than
usual. Missouri Pncillo closed only V cent,
lower than on Saturday, after hnvlng moro
than recovered nit of tho early decline. On
tho other hand, it Is worth noting that both
Westorn Union and Manhattan woro excep
tionally heavy throughout.
rriends of tho two properties Inst named
have expressed fears that unfavorable Infer
ences regarding them may bo drawn from
somo of Mr. Gould's recently published utter
ances. Kxccllont Information is t lint it is
many months slnco ho has assisted oithor of
thoso companies to funds necessary to tho
conduct of tholr business. Tho Manhattan
Hallway Company is to-day n lender of monoy,
whllo Western Union has in bank morn than
enough cash to pay its uoxt dividend : yet with

In this city, pnld JUj.OOO cash for u lot adjoin
ing that building on Hoy street, and spent over
$1,000,000 in nrocting nnd ncqulriug six thou

Imaglno that tho llnnncing of thoso companies
has caused Mr. Gould much anxiety.
Tho market ns a wholo was less itctivo ''ban
It has boon of lato for tho reason that many
dealors aro inclined to cxorolso caution until
Mr. Gould's attitude townrd tho ciiriout t-pec-ulatlon

that every ono, that is, tlio public, is moro pow
erful than Mr. Gould, it has also boon demon
strated within tho shoit memory of Wall street
that ono man can at least check the most
promising bull markot tho street has evor
seen. Mr. Gould Is too shrewd a man to op
poso his wolght to a moving locomotive, but he
has eoitalnly. succeeded in greasing tho tracks,
"Whnt next?" Is tho question that every ono
Interostod In stocks is now asking himself.
Ijito In tho day it became current talk that
Mr. Gould having assisted in bringing tlio
Union l'uciflc mutter to n successful issuo,
possibly by thrcats'of a receivership, and hav
ing shown his ability to intorforo with tho
lislng tide of prices by suggesting n suspen
sion of dividunds on Missouri Pacific, othor Im

This view is not lacking In plausibility, nnd
should it provo to bo correct tho upward
