Tlio fact that Trlnccton nml Harvnitl will
ploy toEtUier tlifa season niAkca tho Inter
colloglatoraco moro Interesting than ovor be
fora. and If a low mora teams wcro admitted
to tlio contest tho battle would bo. in facta
woll as In numv. a struatflo for tlio Inter
collculatA baseball ohumDlonshlii. Another
reason why the moetlnc Is nutn fair test of
tho ability of tlio iulons teams Is tho small
number of camos plnied. On thedatsfora
tamo one of the teams mltlit bo out of shape
and another In rirlinu llx. Then the olomont
of chanco that enters so largely Into baseball
eamoB It apt to faor onoor the other, whore
In u loncor series all tho points of a team
would babroucht out thoioURhly. and endur
ance would play nn Important part. Howe-ier.
as Yolo. Haranl. and I'rlnceton lmo cloctcd
to play on 11 short schedule bails, they can fall
back upon the argument that it is as fair for
one us tlio other.
All threoof thoteamshavobeen Industrious
ly nt work playing exhlbltloiigamooer since
tlio season opened, and all hate made qulto a
credltablo showing.' Yale llrst started tho ball
rolling by playing a series of clono and excit
ing games with tha Boston Loaguu team, and
In vlow of tha vigorous manner In which
Nash s men hnoslnco thrashed other strong
I ciiguo teams, Yale's good showing against
thu champions Is a trlllo In the nature of a
surprise. l'c-albU tho Heltons did not desire
tn exert thcnitclxes so early In thesoaton. and
plated only hnnl enough to win. Due thing Is
eertnln. that if the llostons had played against
iala with thu lti they othlblteu on tho l'olo
(irounds tlio colleirlniis would havo been
snowed under. Therefore inles showing
against tho llostons should not out much of 11
figure In eitimntlng tho strength of the team,
mule had nine men like little. Murphy the
Illilo would rortulnly float above the Crlm
Bon nnd the Orange. Murphy Is not
onlyaenpltnl fielder, hlltor. and bnso runner,
but n line field general .ale Is very weak at
third Iiksi). not esj eclally strong nt second,
and. with tho exception ot Ilcall in centre, the
nutllnld la not Ptrong. In lllilgewuii. Case,
llnwers. and Carter tho team Is well provided
with pitchers, all of good nualltj. and Coleut -pears
able to handle them In good stylo. At
tho bat Yale Is only fair, which also applies to
Its base running.
Harvard appears to rely principally on ingn
I amis, w ho pitched a phenomenal game against
the Manhattan A. . team some time auo.
shutting them out without n hit. Since then
hn has pitched a number of good games, but
in one or two was hit very hard If Highlands
happened to have nn off day when he fuced
Trfnceton or Yale. Harvard's lip would ho up.
Upton has shown line work behind tho bat.
and the Held work is, generally good. They
also appear to hit pretty well. If Highlands la
in phenomenal mood when ho pitches In the
championship games. Harvard will make
trouble.
Judged by the play In the preliminary sea
son. I'rlnceton lthe most formidable team in
the raoe. To start with, nelthor Yolo nor Har
vard havo so good and ronslstonta pitcher as
Y'oung. nnd in Drown ha has n catcher who
standstill behind the bat like a professional
and throws to bases like, a rlflo shot. King at
second and Itamsdoll at third aro very strong.
Tho weak snot at llrst has apparently beon
strengthened by tho substitution of Gould for
Otto. Wright and McKenzie aro two rattling
outlloldors. and bpoonor is reliable. Whilo
tho Princetons are not sluggers, they hit con
siderably hnrdor than tho other two teams
Whllo It is n hazardous matter to pick a win
ner in a baseball contest, amateur nr profes
sional, owing to tho uncertainties of tho game,
still on tho basis ot the form shown up to data
there is ground for tho assertion that Prince
ton is the most powerful of the three teams.
Whether the Orange and Black will win a ma
jority of the throe games to benlavcdwith
Harvard and Yale Is another matter.
as neiwecn taio ana inncoion ic is a not
able fact that tho former waB beaten twice by
the Htaten Island Cricket Club by 1 to a and tl
to Ti. while I'rlnceton easily beat theCrickota
by 7 to 1 Prineoton beat Dartmouth VJ to 2.
and Harvard had hard work to beat Dart
mouth, tho score being 4 to .'(.
There appears to be little doubt that If the
University of Pennsylvania had a chance to
contest for the championship, the odds would
be greatly In favor of the Pennslvanians win
ning The latter have thrashed all three of
the big college representatives, obliterat
ing tho Orange and Black with a coat ot
whitewash. No matter which of thu "big
three" wins the pennant, there will be
a general impression that they hold
something to which they aro not en
titled, tor tho Pennsyhunlans have
shown thomselvos able to defeat all rolleglnte
baseball organizations. While Hnyne is the
star performer of the Pennsylvania Univer
sity's team, ho is bnoked un by a remarkably
fine lot ot fielders and hitters.
Dartmouth lias also shown ability to cope
with the best of the college teams, and in a
college league would be heard from.
