THE NEW YACHT
BotrriMKn was noteworthy through tho fact that I
thiitiitli ehe Is the one hundred and tenth boat
thor have built at the yard she Is I the Ort
yacht that they hao constructed etace the
launching of the Sultana some seven years ago
The success of the boat means a great deal to
the hundreds of workmen who have been em
ployed In her construction and they have done
ihulr bent to prove that New Yorks shipwrights
and Ironworkers are still tho best In the country
Half a century ago New York was famous for
lit slilpbutldeis and some of the finest and
fastest piicKets and clipper ships engaged In the
ransallantlc trade went built In this port The
Inmous Flying Dutchman como from William
I Webbs yard and other flyer like the Mon >
tauk Comet Challenge and Guy Mannerlng
to say nothing of the famous yacht America
took tholr first dip In the waters of New York
Day Of late years however few bouts out
lido of tugs and passenger steamers have been
built here and tho trade seem t have cone t
the Delaware or abroad While a number of
ailing yachts are still built around New York
the majority of our wealthy yachtsmen have
gone abroad for their steam yacht despite the
fact tht they can b built almost as cheaply and
quite as good here as was amply exemplified to
jcjterday those who saw the launching of the Sovereign
Tho launching which took place at 1215
oulocx wa successful In every way but the
jnclit thanks to well greased ways sped BO
rnulilly toward the water that the owners wife
k Who was to christen her failed to break the
t C champagne bottle whlih hung suspended from
I her knlfolke prow This little defect wax
quickly remedied by a sailor who not only
llt broke the bottle properly but drank a greater

IlosTON May 18Kld McCoy defeated Mys
terious Hilly Smith tonight on a foul commit
ted a moment before the gong rang for the finish
ish of the sixth round The battle was held In
tho West Newton street armory
About 2000 persons sweltered through a long
delayed and unsatisfactory exhibition Two
contests were scheduled The first was between
t Eamiui Kelly of New York and Mike Seam of
Iewlston Me Kelly had the prestige of one
f victory over Sears and the Now Yorker should
have received the decision tonight
t It nan raid that the little fellows were muD
undtr 117 pounds Kelly looked to b over lU
and uas In jnurh better condition than the
l AlMoii lad lleforo they appeared In the
rln Limo was consumed lu wrangling over a
clause In tho artcle conult agreement about the
cam should the police Interfere Kelly said
I tso ho would t tight with the understanding
I that Heferee Hill Daly nas t give a declson In
any cent They were to fight fifteen rounds
but only nine were finished
Whon timey left their corners to begin work In
the tenth round the > were ordered to sit down
and the announcement was made that the po
lice had stopped the tight because they thought
I bears no match for the New Yorker That was
evident only In two rounds and while It was al
most a sure win for Kelly lu the end still the
Len futon man had a oo fighting chance and
I was fresh and ready when time was called for
the tenth Why the fight was stopped Is a mys
t tery It was called a draw
Then there was a long wrangle between Smith
and McCoy which was finally ended by both
men agreeing to a decision police or no police
bmllh had foolishly agreed that there should b
no punching a lree break away mining
his only chances with such a longarmed and
clever man as McCoy He was repeatedly
warned for InUghtlng with one arm free ana
three limes the tight was stopped by tbe referee
The men entered the ring about 1015 oclock
Smith neighed 141 pounds and McCoy 18IIW
The latter opened the first round with a light
left on the face Smith appeared to b rattled
from the start He lost three good chance to
use bis left In the first round and several time
covered his face with both arm and crouched
low at a feint from McCoy Every time the
Khl showed signs of coming Smith went all to
pieces As a result McCoy 1 was all over him
puffing his eyes and bringing blood from his
eleo
mouth and cheek
Smith In the half dozen rounds fought Rot In
three hard rights but they landed too high upon
the head todo damage In the third round near
the finish the men came together and Smith
gineMcCoys head a fierce twist before being
released In the fourth and fifth rounds some
bard fighting was done and Smith was roundly
hissed for using his right when breaking away
lime latter mined a left lead In the sixth
round and cloy after getting him badly
<
twisted by feinting went at him and put In
Ilht rights and lefts on tbe face and rib
with hugged to escape the fusllade The referee
I eree got hold of both men and while trying to
push them apart Smith disengaged him right
R and ripped It Into McCoys wind That settled
I II The spectators hlised and the referee gave
1 tie decision to McCuy
