MOVDAT. Sept. SI.
The most noteworthy featureof to-day's stock
market was moderate purchases by commission
houses. As a rule commission houses are not
advising their customers to buy stocks, not onjy
because of the uncertainty that attends every
political campaign, but because of the condition
of the money market, which makes It Impractica
ble for brokers to makeextenslvo commitments
in behalf of their clients, r'or these reasons to
day's purchases of stocks were tho moro tlenlll
cant, and It Is believed that in one quarter at
least they were for actual purchasers; that Is,
for those who will pay for them and take them
oulof the street. A weaL market for sterling
exchange, togother with tho withdrawal of
another million dollars from the Hank of Kns
land furshlpment to this country, and trust
worthy forecasts that tbe present im
port movement will foot up at least
$30,000,000 in the near future, stimu
lated a more hopeful sentiment. A good deal
or encouragement was also derived from the
fact that both the time, money, and commercial
paper markets are beginning 10 feel the Increase
in the volume of currency resulting from the
Importations of gold. The receipts of gold
from abroad to-day were $500,000 at this port
and $500,000 at Boston, making the total to date
Sd.HIIO.BSO.
Tho market was strong throughout, and,
though the volume of transactions was small,
the net advances recorded were In manycaes
Important. Manhattan Hallway scored the
greatest net advance, namely. 1 cent., and
was closely followed by Roik Island and West
ern Union. In which tbe dealings were upon a
very small scalo. Sugar Kenning, which, fol-
I lowing Its custom, led the list In re
spect to activity, was held in check by what
appeared to be realizing sales. The usu
ally active Granger shares and I.oulsvlllo
and Nashville supplied a fairly large proportion
of the dealings, and spasms of activity may be
noted In United States Leather preferred and In
Heading. Thero was a Ktotlfjlng increase in
, thu volume of business In the bond department
that offset to an extont the largely professional
character of the dealings lu stocks.
