There was an nbun, danco of news favorable to the stock market this morning. It Included the unprecedented bids for city bonds at satisfactory prli.es, Lord Salisbury's announcement of the settlement of the Venezuelan controversy, ad vices from Washington that the present Ad. ministration would not Interfere In Cuban affairs and that the Incoming Administration is not llkeiy to call an extra session of Con gress, ami the details, given exclusively In this column, of the sale In this market of 11,000,000 or United btatoa bonds by the Hank of Kngland. The professional element took the usual view that tlitse faornble I developments warranted sales of stocks. 'lliU opinion was, apparently, not entertained by the returning and Increasing clientele of commis sion houses. In consequence the market, though in the main strong, was Irregular. The features of the trading were the excellent dis tribution of the transactions and tho promi nence of the low-priced stocks. The halt dozen shares that virtually monopolised speculative Interest before the Presidential election did not receive more attention than a number of the usually less active shares, and nearly all of them closed fractionally lower, while a number of now speculative favorites enjoyed material net advances. Conspicuous among there last were Southern Itallway preferred, Hocking Valley. American Spirits preferred, Pacltlo Mall, Colorado Fuel, United States Cordage guaranteed, and United States Rubber. There was no news afloctlne any of these. Tho attention they received was due entirely to the revival of speculative Inter est. Kfforts were made, apparently, to Influence the market for Manhattan Kail nay by the publication locally of all the rumors and gossip regarding efforts made tnme time ago to bring about an alliance between, the elevated railroad system and tlio Metropolitan Traction Company. It Is to be noted that the money, particularly gold, hoarded before election Is now returning to tho banks very rapidly. Gold to the amount of $3,000,000 was deposited In the Clearing Houso vaults to day In exohnnge for Clearing Houso certificates.
