Ban C: Depart aa laaTTaaMal An Alans lb. Une. R, G. Dun & Cc's weekly review of trad. Is sued yesterday, says: The retarding Influence of cold and unseason able weather has passed. The gain In business which in spite of It was seon a week ago has become clearer to all. As no genulno Improve ment evor begins with an uplifting of prices bo fore tho producing forca has become fairly em ployed, this docs not. and the buying of 7,000 bales Australian wool by one Boston house, and 100,000 tons pig Iron by a Wall street operator, and advancing prices for stocks, are only proof that tbo actual conditions are understood by somo capable men. There is evidence of gradu ally enlarging business In every Important de partment, more establishments havo beon set at work, and more hands nployed, and, while pru dence still hinders speculative excesses, the progress toward better things Is unchecked. Reports from tho various cities this week show a vory general progress and a continuing largo distribution through retail trado. Tho proof Is clearer, as It should be. In the In dustrial than In tho trading field. Contracts providing for consumption of 7,000,000 tons iron ore hare already been made, 2,000,000 within the past fortnight. It Is believed, though last year's contracts only terminated about two months ago. Bessemer oro Is selling lower by 20 to 30 cents than at the outset, Blwablk at 2.25 against 82.65, but tho heavy demand puts additional mines at work. The specu lative purchase of 100,000 tons Southern pig at C3.75 clears tho deck for a larger business at better figures, and sales at Chicago 150,000 tons have been the largest for eighteen months: Reaction after the sudden purchase of 60,000 tons Bessemer at Pittsburg leaves tbs price 99.50 por ton. but tho heavy orders for bars there and for 50,000 tons at Chicago, mainly from implement makers, with orders for many new buildings at the W est. one of magni tude at Philadelphia and soveral at New York, tho larger demand for plates and sheets, the order for twenty-two miles of pipe, nnd tho pur chases of steel rails which hat e startod the now Jollet works with good orders, are far raoro Im portant than the speculation In materials. Coko production has Increased 2,500 tons, nearly 2Hi per cent., without change In price Tin Is stronger at 13.75 cents, and tho coppor output In Mny, larger than In any other month Ibis rear, has not yet lowered quotations, while lead Is stronger. Boot and shoo factories not only have largor orders, but some concessions on boots mado a week ago can no longer be ob tained. Shipments on old orders are gaining, and though Bmaller than for five ears aro but 2 per cent, less than In June, 1802. More denllmrs are reported In hemlock solo, oil grain and split leathei, nnd, though quotations do not alter, concessions formerly reported have been reduced. Hides are stronger, 1.0 per cent, at Cbtcagn, with the old report of scarcity. Tbo demand for print cloths, for the first time in many months, has exceeded tho week's pro duction, nnd the price has risen a shade, while prints and other grades of cotton goods are In slightly better demand. There Is a more widely distributed business In woollens than was ex pected. Clothiers are buying, and, as they come late, aro In haste. Some Eastern mills have been in tbo market, but the hulk of the purchases of wool hns again been by speculate o houses at Boston, where almost ten million pounds wore sold against 2.551.300 at New York and Phila delphia. Western operators still pay more than Eastern prices warrant. In produce markets the year draws toward a close with slightly stronger prices for corn, owing to heavy foreign buying, and in cotton owing' to a better foreign demand, notwith standing moro encouraging crop reports. No body can count bales in June, but the outlook is so far favorable that few make large ventures against the yield exceeding 0.000.000 bales. Wheat was hoisted nearly 2 cents, but foil about as much, closing a quarter higher for tha week. In spito of reduced Western receipts and Atlantic exports. Excellent reports from winter wheal regions west of Ohio had much influence, but still more the great but really unknown In crease of spring wheat acreage with ex ceptional prospects thus far. In two weeks of June, Atlantic exports of wheat and flour have been iqual to 4,977,053 bushels, against 0.210, 823 last year. A remarkable roturn of foreign trado comes for April, showing an excess of Imports over ex ports of only $1,559,343, while net exports of gold less ore were uboutS3.500.000. and of sil ver $1,000,000. This was In spito of an lncreaso of 31 per cent. In dutiable Imports and 54 per cent. In customs receipts for the month. Ex ports were 11,2 per cent. larger than last year, and It is especially noteworthy that outside the principal farm products tho exports increased more than 10 per cent. BInco June 1 Imports have not beon remarkably large, and the rush seems to have passed. In nine weeks ondlng with May imports wore over 47 per cent, larger and exports 7 per cent, larger than last year. But In two weeks of June Imports at New York havo been 10 per cent, and exports 18 percent, larger, w hlch, if continued through the month, would moan a largo excess of exports. Stocks have been so strong that cheap traders are scarod. There Is a public, and when It buys or sells the Street has not much power. In three days purchases exceeded 750.000 shares, nnd prices, after some weeks' rise, noil half a day's reaLtlon on Wednesday, only to rlso again near ly 75c per share on Thursday. Railroad earn ings are encouraging. In Juno 0 per cent, larger than last year, and only 4.1 per cent, less than In 1 892,and tonnage shows Improvement, especially In west-bound Iron products, glass, sugar, ami farm machinery. Failures In two weeks ending Juno 10 were IP4.944.U53, against 3,908,814 last car, 9. 51.841 In the same weeks of 18115, exclusive of the Cordairo failure for 9,ltJ0,000, und Ij0.5fi0.025 In 1801. Manufacturing were 2,073.05(1, against 1.(116.071 last year, nnd trading were 2, 1(12,0(17, against 2,242,641 lad year. Failures for tho week havo been 1U8 in Ibe United States, against 27U last year, and 30 In Canuda, aguinst 28 last year. The Improvement In Iran. Prrrsnuna, June 1 8. Evidences of a better tone In the Iron and steel markets are plentiful this week. Sales of pig Iron and ore have stimu lated trado In nrlntis linos. There will be somo big orders fur pine placed In tbo next few days. Pig lrou and bllleti, whllo not showing any better prices, are moving with more freedom in the markets, lilgsulcsof bar Iron aro reported in the West, Maw Steel Bollrr Home ror tha Raw T.rk Steam Company, The Building Department granted a permit yesterday for the Berlin Iron Bridge Company to erect for the New York Steam Company a one story steel boiler house 79 by 200 feet from Fifty-ninth to blxtieth streets, at East River, at a cost of $125,000. An alteration permit was granted totheestate ofJCbarles A. Baudoulne for $4,000 improve ments to the (He-story iron and brick building at 392 Broadway. Cnleag. Drinking taa Baa. CniCAOO, June 18. Chicago Is drlnklna; leu beer than formerly. For tho first Are months of this year 176,000 barrels less wars consumed than in the same period last year. The saloons are 050 fewer than a year ago. To-day's stock market did not fulfil the expec tations aroused by yesterday's well-distributed trading at advancing prices. The character of yesterday's market evidently inspired a greater degree of confidence than has existed hereto fore, for there was a fresh demand for stocks, principally from commission houses, that car ried prices for practically all of the active stocks to the highest figures yet recorded. Be sides, London was a moderate buyer. After the first hour, however, tho demand fell off and tho market became narrow, a condition that en couraged professional operators to resume their efforts to control IL They succeeded In bring ing about a moderate reaction during the mid dlo ol the day, but the absence of any disturbing news and of selling, except by local speculators. Induced a repurchasing movement toward the close that left the majority of stocks fractionally above the lowest prices, Tho market can ac curately be described as Irregular, with tho bulk of tho business, which was on about tho ssmo scale as yesterday, concentrated In a few slocks, namely. Sugar Refining. Chicago Clns, St. Paul, and Chicago, Burlington und Qiilney. These four stocks supplied nearly hulf of tho total transactions. Chicago das was exceptionally strong, sold at tbo highest price recorded for It, and closed nearly a point higher than yesterday. Sugar Refining, which wnt first In point of activity, made several fluctua tions of a point and dually scored n fractional net gain. The ouly otbor noteworthy uol ad Vanto was tlint of - V cent. In Consolidated Has. The market for tho entire gruup of local gas securities was affected by unconfirmed re ports of deals between two or more of the com panies. Of tho less active shares Manhattan Hallway, Missouri Pacific Western Union, Susquehnnna ami Western, and ML Joseph and Grand Island Orel preferred were axcopliomilty strong. Tho net declines were, in tho main, unlmportnni, ex cept that the selling of Union Pacific Indicated a desire on the part of holders to avoid paying the first installment ot the ejimem, which may bo oallod in the near future, i'he strength of the foiolgn exchange market, noted yesterday, has resulted in a resumption of exports of specie Tho shtpmonta to-morrow will aggregate 9350, 000, of w hlch tiSO,000 was withdrawn from the Bub-Treasury to-day and is consigned to Berlin. The remainder goes to Paris, it Is bcUored that tho ultimate destination of sll ot this specie, which Is shipped upon peremptory orders, is Austria. It was announced that a Boston bank ing house will ship $500,000 nuxt Tuesday, and tho Indications are that local bankers will ship about 1-2,500,000 on the same day. It appears that English, French, and German bankers prefer to pay a premium for gold in this market for Austria rather than draw upon their own holdings of the metal. In view of tha probable crop requirements in Europe later in the year, the drawers of exchango consider that the present shipments of specie aro virtually temporary loons. At the moment, however, tbo supply of commercial bills Is light, and there Is an active demand for exchange to remit interest payment due abroad July 1, and aUo for letters ot credit. Of news affecting stock values thero Was v.ry littla, a circumstance that was, par- haps, responsible for ths irresralsr ccmrss at prices, for without freth developments to Influ ence Its operations th.-specnUtlve element in variably' become, restless and is disposed to chango its position on ths market.
