It wus da) of donrnfulU for tho talent, who plunged mi August Belmont's crack colt Fire arm to "Hi the Great Trial and Michael P. l)jtr' llo.i Urtish to land the Sheepshead Bay Ihudli np Neither flattered their backers for a lncle moment. Tho former got away last In a Add of twelve, and Ben Brush was beaten all the nay In the Shoopaheail, the start for which was much poorer than Mr. PeltlnsUTa avowee ssml-orT. The Ureat Trial is the second stake In value for two-) e-tr-olda run In this country, and Is only outranked by the Futurity, which Is decided at tho autumn meeting of the Ooncy Island Jockey Club. Speculation baa been rife for months as to the probnblo winner, and erery ownar with a cana'dile for this prlro has strained every nerve 'o bring his nominee to tho post as fit as possible. It promised to be an open race in the opinion of the talent until August Belmont's colt Firearm shouldered 129 pounds In the June Etakoslast woek and won romping. Since thon the knowing ones have been full of Firearm and would bear of nothing but the spanking son of Imported Hayon d'Or and Fides to win, even with 129 pounds on his back. He won last week with such conauuiniato case, showod such high form, and had such a taking way of going that he ronl uot be a counterfeit, and many of tho turf critics acclaimed him as the bost of his age seen hereabouts up to date this year. As a con sequence. Firearm, opening at B to 5 in the spec ulation yesterday, was so persistently sought after that ho went to even monoy at the close It's only tv case of going to the post and get-ting- away," said an enthusiast during the early hours of the afternoon when the Great Trial was being talked over and the capabilities of Firearm camo up for discussion. Hamburg at the close of the Grav esend meeting was considered one of the best colts shown so far this year, but his poor form In the Double Event, which he was srpected to win hands down, mode the talent wonder whether his braco of victories oror Previous were not of a flukey character, and for the most part tho smart division looked askance at the Kentucky representative yester nay, particularly when the hundred-pound boy Wllhlte was again scheduled to ride him. They did not know that Hamburg had been very soro In the shoulders when he ran In the Doublo Event, and that for some days past he had spent several hours a day In the soaking tub. M. F, Dsryer fancied Hamburg at one time, but when he saw how sura the son of Hanover was after hia Doable Event engagement he refused to buy the youngster. This explains how It was 7 to 1 against Hamburg's chances of winning the Great Trial yesterday. Kltefoot, John MoOofferty's pretty filly, was second choice at 0 to 1, while it was 10 to 1 against the Morris pair, Varus and Bowling Brook; 10 to 1 Previous, and 10 to 1 George Keene Handball was 12 to 1, Murillo IS. Lau iletnann. Tho Huguenot and Commerce were heid at 40 to 1. On the way to the post Firearm easily out looked his Held, and carried more comment than nil of the other candidates combined. Previous suowel thefmaTk of a blistering on the right hip, and Hamburg lookbd very light In the quarter and appeared sleepy and heavy as he paraded past the stand. The rail had been dr wn by Kltefoot, while the favorite won the outsido or least enviable of all the positions at the post. There was a delay of twenty minutes at the post, during which there were two breaks of considerable magnitude. The flag woe finally thrown, with Hamburg first nnd Firenrm last. Tod Sloan, who had the mount tin Previous, attempted to keep pace with Hamburg, but the son of Hanover was too fleet, and slipped away from his field with the great est or BA30. In the run to the woods Hamburg ooened a gap of three lengths. Goorge Keene, Uowlinn brook, and Previous headed the strug gling field, and whips were flying merrily long betoro halt tho journey was accomplished in the endeavor to overhaul the fleet Hamburg. The Western colt appeared to only touch the ground in spoU, and a quarter of it mite from borne he was master of the day. All the way home Wilhite, a lad who rode at New Orleans last winter, was sitting up straight, and Ham burg wus plaslng with his opponents. He ulti mately passed the Judges winner hands down by three lengths. Previous, under punishment, h ended George Keene In the final sixteenth of a mile, and landed second money by a comfort able margin. Bowling Droofc was fourth and Handbill fifth. Firearm was next to loot, with Taral pulling up at tbe wire. Flrearm'b race was too poor to be true, and be must run aguln before tho talent will accept yes terday's showing as his true form. T.irul said that he got off badly, while others say that he broke slowly nnd was out of the race iieiore he got going. Hamburg Is a marvellously quick coltat tbe gate, and could win a race at the start veryeusy. lie Is a buy colt, with whito face.und both hind legs stockinged half way to tbe hock, by lUuover out of Lady Keel, by FeliowcrafU Lady Ueel wasn vory speedy mare, and being out of Mdnnlc Gray, the duin of Domino, Hamburg li certainly entitled to be speedy. The value of the stake to the winner was (17,000, to the second 92,000, and to the third 81.000. The Larchmont Yacht Club celebrated, as usual, the glorious Fourth with their eighteenth annual regatta, which was sailed In a good, brisk, southwesterly breeze. The fleet of yachts was the largest that has been started in any re gatta this year, and, as the breeze held through out, all the races were fairly contested. In ths big schooner class tho Colonla, the Emerald, and the Amorlta raced together for tho Colt Cup, and, as one yachtsman remarked, it was very properly won by Commodore l'oatley'e Colonla. The Colonla seemed lo bo better handled yoster day than she was In somo of her former races. Bho beat the Emerald by 2 minutes and 32 sec onds, nearly all ot which she rained on the first round, Percy Chubb, owner of the Vigilant, and Royal Phelps Carroll, owner of the Navahoo, in a very sportsmanlike manner, arranged a raco between their two yachts, agreoing to sail boat against bo t without tlmo allowance. This was a particularly Interesting contost, becauso It was tho first tlmo thcso two yachts hud ever mot In a raco. Tho Vigilant won tho race by four minutes and two eocomls. Of the yachts entered In tho schooner class In cruising trim. Vice Commodore Adams's Sachem was tho only ons to cross the line, evidently having scared all tho others out He sailed over the courso alone for the prlro. 8yco won from the Awa and Slttae, a boat that camo from Bristol with a great reputation, but did not make any remarkable showing In tho race. In the 30-foot class the Acushla met the 8urprlso again and this time sho won. The Acushla has been remeasured and she Is nearly four feet smaller than the Surprise, so she Is In receipt ot considerable time allowance. In the yawl class the Sakana won handily, Tho Vaquero III, won the 30-foot class race, with Hera second and Voda third. The Voda was sailed by Mr. Cornelius Vanderbllt, Jr., and ono of his crow wns his wife. Tho Hourl won from Vnquoro I. in tho 25-foot clnsn. making her owner. E. Burton Hart, Jr., happy In that ho proved last Saturdays rnco a tluko. in tne .0-1001 t'lasi ine nxttc, snllrd ny Ir ving Cox, won handily, with the Mumo Becond and Alunka third. The Momo, however, got five minutes tha worst of the start, nnd she wns only three minutes and furl) ono seconds behind at the finish, so that If the two bonis bnd got ult fairly tha Momo would bate won. In tbo big cabin cat class the Ell led tho others around tho course. But she lost the riu e to Dorothy on t lmo allowance At Ihe outer murk, however, Wilbur Hunan, wbo sailed tbe Kit. claimed that ho was followed by the Dorothy, and protested. It the protest Is sustained, tho Kit will be placed first and tho Volsung second. Ethel won tbo 25-foot class, and Collrcn w as second. In tho 20-foot class the Mlnnctonka wus tbe winner. When the preparatory elgnal was sounded, nt 11 :25. a fair southwesterly breeze was blow lng.
