The unuiually Inrce and nldcly distributed transactions in stocks yesterday wore unques tionably sugaestlve of a reaction In prlcea. That many operators. Including a lareo number of proresslonals, entertnlucd this lew uns shown by the setback in tho last hour of business yes terday and by declines of n point or ruoro during the first two or three hours totluy. Tho comploto record of today's market fur nlsL'es important o Idencoas to tho character of tho present dealings In securities It Is plain that realizing sties hi vo been chiefly by tho pro fessional element nnd comparatively emnll op erators, and that the larger Interosts, which in ordinary times can create or practically di stroy a uiarkrtihnvenoiasyetdlstrlbi ted any percepti ble amount of their holdings. Tho Indicat ions aro that present conditions 111 derer the mtrketlng of any largo blocks of securities for somo tlmo to come. In consequence, a steadily increasing demand for securities encounters a diminishing supply. Thcro Is practically no liquidation of Investment holdings; on the contrary, those holdings are being Increased, nnd at the same time tho shrewdest operators are indisposed to sell their stocks. If they do soil they are alert to recover their itocks at very moderate conces sions. A slightly lower range of prices for American securities in London and the customary selling by foreign arbitrage houses encouraged local sales throughout the list. Best Us, there were palpable efforts to depress price, presumably to recover stocks sold for both accounts during the last few doys, Thceo were effect ive in a number of cases, notably Sugar Refining, Chicago Gas. Rock Island, Korth ern Pacific preferred, and in seroral of tho less active stocks. The depression, however, wa shortlived, for H both disclosed and at tracted a large number of buying orders. As the day wore away the demand for stocks n as stimulated by the report of r.lhvay gross earnings for the last week in July and for that month that came to hand. Conspicuous among them was tho Increase of neirlj $70,000 reported by the Chesapeake and Ohio Company for tho last week in July and of 8114,000 for the month. Another noteworthy increase was that reported by the Chicago Great Western Company of 9'JO.OOO for tho week and $10,000 for the month. This was fol lowed by a net advance of la V cent. In Chi cago Great Western stock. Other significant returns were made by the Missouri, Kansas and Texas, the Missouri Pacific, and the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern Companies. Tho recovery la the market did not, however, get under a full headway' until tho Louisville and Nnhvillo Company reported an Increase for the fourth neek in Jul) of $108,000 nd for the month of $103,000. ThU was noon followed by the "publication of tha Southern Railway statement showing an Increase of pearly $31,000 for the last week In July. Tho figures referred to, together with those fnrnlshed by the Rock Island and tho St. Paul companies yesterday, have convinced Wall street, and doubtlcst will convince the public, that the transportation Industry of tho coun try Is about to enter upon a period of unusual prosperity. In considering these earnings the fact should not be over looked that In most cases Increases in gross receipts mean even larger proportionate increases In net ernlngs; for in the casesof well managed roads tho additlsnil traftlo Is han dled without material Increase In operat ing expenses. Tho Improvement In Louisville and Nashville earnings, though possibly due in part to unusually heavy coil trafllo because of tho strlko of tho Northern bituminous coal miners, appeared to have a decldod effect upon foreign as well as local sentiment and, as nlroidy noted, Influenced tho entire rrmket, which was not Impaired by a drop of 7 points In Consolidated Gas on Hunt transactions. Anion the Interesting features of tho day were a shirp advance In American Tobacco, of which 3 points wcro permanent, a, rovival of acth lly in C, B. and Qulncy nt n net ad vnnco of 15a' cent., unusual nctl ltj In New York Cen tral at a net ad vnnco of 14i V cent., and among tho usually less actlvo shares gains of 23 cent. In LaclcdoGas, 2 V cent. In Michigan Central, lio In Susquohannn nnd Western prefrrre-l. 14 in Oregon Navigation, nnd 2Vt In St. Lonls and Sin Francisco 1st preferred. Tho dealings In Illinois Cent r ! w ere unusually honvy, aggregat ing nearly S.000 shnrcs. Indications of fresh In terest in that stock wcro noted in this column several clays ago. Slnco then London has sold additional amounts, which havo been absorbed at steadily advancing prlco?: but the foroUn supply now nppcars to be about ex hausted. Tho movement. It is understood. Is based upon tho dlvldi nd record of tho company, thof.ict that tho company has expended large amounts in Improving Its facilities nnd main taining tliostrndard of its roidbcd nnd equip ment during tho Inst flvo or sit years, nhen other companies wcro compelled to retrench In thoo respects, and tint Its trifllc. resulting from the movement of staple crops. Is less likely tosulTorfrom tho ciprlcs of n.ituro than tho Gnnger trunk lines thnt hare extensive mileage bevoml tha Mississippi Iticr. Tho m-xrkot for Reading srcurltlos continues to reflect Increasing speculative interest, whlih rrsults undoubtedly from convictions that tho company will mako a decidedly bettor showing for tho last half of the 5 ear than It did for tho first sW months. As a mat ter of fact, tho Reading Company, like some of tho other anthracite, coil rnrrylng railroads, mikes an IndllTVent showing of earnings during tbo first half of the year, butltiproves its averaro during the last hnlf. Tho chances are thU tho company's statement for July will be a decided Improvement upon that for June, which was roiently published. Phould tho earnings for the present flscnlyeirho no hetter thnn those for tho last fscaly.nr. they will show surplus cirnlngs after nil chargis, as readjusted by the plan of reorganization, of $300,000. During tho current yenr tho chM-ges have beon brought down cry nearly to the fig ures fixed by tho plan of reorg. nization. Last yearlhcy were, of course, raucu larger than tha amount contemplated In tho plan, because a considerable amount of the re'undlng at low rates of Interest, particularly of branch line obligations, had not been nffectod. Of specific developments affecting values one of the most Interesting to-day was tbo an nouncement that the American Spirits Company has found a new and profitable, field of opera tions In South America, ns related in detail In another column, Tho closing of the market was strong at about tho best prices.
