The reaction in the stock market that took place to-day nm certainly warranted by specu lative conditions. Tbo dealings in stocks dur ing the last four days were enormous, and the advance in prices practically continuous. It would be strange indeed if a market of the breadth andstrcngth of the last few daysdld not Invite realizing sales by Important interests, as well us by small oporators. The most significant feature of the market is that to-day's reaction was not more pro nounced. Tbo fact that it was comparatively slight is evidence that the buying power is more extensive than even the most enthusiastic bulls have believed. In addition to speculative con ditions conducive) to a reaction, tbo movement was Influenced by a break In tbe price of wheat, which was also natural, becausa of the heavy speculative buying that has accompanied the European demand for that cereal. Still another factor, and one that will tend to restrict reck less trading, was tho decision of a fairly large lender of money on small margins to curtail bis line of accommodations to bis fellow brokers. Ills method has been to borrow stocks from concerns doing business upon Inadequate capital at higher rates than those paid by substantial firms and exacting stop orders on the stocks virtually carried, the execution of w hlch would preclude bis sustain ing a loss. It was currently reported to-day that this curtailment of accommodations was raado at the suggestion of interests that desire to force liquidation by weakly murglnod holders of stocks. If this Is tbe case, and tho theory is not an improbable one, a reasonable lnforence is that certain important Interests aro souring no effort to bring about a further decline in prices. Although tbe total transactions were about 816,000 shares less than yesterday, the market as a whole was active, the total sales being over half a million shares. The falling off In dealings was more pronounced in tbe bond market than in the stock department, the sales belnc about 2 V cent, less thau yesterday. For eign arbitrage operations were compara tively unimportant. It is becoming plainer every day that London is following this market, having forfeited its claim to leadership by singularly incorrect iews of tbe commercial and financial situation in the United States. As a number of theactlte stocks enjoyed smart Advance in tho earl) dealings, the decline that subsequently took place did not remit in many noteworthy net losses. Tbe most conspicuous ones were in Northern PaolOo preferred, which led the list in respect to activity, In American Tobacco and in Loulivlllo and Nashville. Sugar llcflnlng was exceptionally strong, closing fractionally higher at a recession of noarly Q points from the best price. Other stocks that proved superior to the reactionary tendency were Chesapeake and Ohio, Poclflo Matl, Missouri Pacific, and a long list ot usually inactive shares. The distribution of transactions was fully as good as yestorday, considering the somewhat smaller volume ot business. There is a possibility of further realizing sales to-morrow by timid operators, who do not caro to be long ot stocks over Sunday; but it is by no means certain that the adoption ot such a conservative policy will prove profitable. The dosing was steady at fractional recoveries from the lowest prices. Final sales compare with those ot yesterday as follows: Aug IB. Aug. 13. Aug. IB. Aug. 18.
