To-day's markot was about what might hare been expected to follow the steady Improve ment In prices durlnt; the latter part ot last week. The opening was b Irons and prices ad vanced durlne tho first half of the day. Higher quotations for American securities In London had soma effect upon local and professional sentiment, but the prin cipal forco under the market consisted of a demand for securities that had accumulated in commission housc3 over Sunday. As a matter of fact London did very llttlo In this market, that Is, through the medium of nrbltr ige houses. Tho effective buylnu was domestic and was tho result of a growing appreciation of tho largo and constantly Increasing wealth of this country and also of Its enormous commercial strength. The Improvement In prices that took place in the early dealings naturally Invited profit tnking on a fairly large scale. That opera tion ns at onco follow ed by an attack all alorg tho lino by professional traders, whoe sales for both accounts were accompanied by rumors of damage to the corn crop. Humors for several days past havo been that the next noteworthy movement In tho cereal markets would bo an advance in corn, based upon meteoro logical conditions unfaorab'o to the ripen ing of a largo portion of the crop. It looks, therefore, as if the Western speculators in t l's, having exhausted their local ammuni tion in the wheat market, were about to repeat tho tact'es -rhich they used toadantngein tho wheat market. In various groups on tho block Exchange to-day tho alleged damage to tho corn crop was inndo a good deal of. In other quarters It was maintained that crops had been damaged by exccssUe rains, whllo others argued that the crop is Buffering from want of moisture. Ac cording to Western railway managers, tho irld of co-n this j car will be much larger thin usual, and. besides, the railroads hate a largo amount of last year's crop that is nttnltlng transporta tion. Tho receipts of grain at Chicago to day wero tholargiat in tho history of that centre. This means thnt tho old crop is beginning to corns to market. The dealings in stocks were the largest re corded on any day slnco the sharp adanco In prices two or three weoks ago, and It is also in teresting to not that the business was very nearly as well distributed as 00 tbo banner day ot tho week before last. The Granger stocks wcro again tho fatorlios, with bt. l'aul leading with respect to activity, but Hock Island was foremost In point of strength. It now seems to be a foregone conclu sion that both tho Hock Island and St. I'aul com panies will Increase their dlvldonds within tbo next fou weeks. Something of the sort must be contemplated by both companies this fall or the shares would not hac aihnnccJ to present fig ures. The earnings of all of tho Orangor companies that are upon a dhldond basis forcshndow net receipts that will warrant a more liberal distribution of profits than heretofore. Next to Bt. l'aul, tho heaviest trading was In C'hcsapcako and Ohio, Thut stock w as unusually active and scored an excep tional net advnnco. Other features of a com paratively uncvontful speculation woro Atch ison preferred, Missouri l'aclflc, Paclflo Mall, Heading securities, and a number of usually In ucllo stocks. Tho closing was dull and Bupcr llclallj heavy. Final sales compare with those of Saturday aa follow: Avg 2H.
