Now York Ccntral.l 1 m, Wabaaapf jjg TttCRaDAT, Sept. 2. To-day's stock market showed a further broad ening of Interest In securities and also a pro nounced difference of opinion as to the course of prices In the immediate future Tho dealings were upon nn extensive scale, aggregating up proximately (100,000 shores. It Is to bo noted, however, that thero was a fulling off In the transactions In bonds as compared with yester day, and a dccldod decreaso as compared with tho transactions on Tuesday, As to fluctua tions, tho markot was Irregular and the tone vas rather feverish. This last condition was duo to an extent to the sharp advance in Omaha common yesterday and by the fact that It was followed to-day by noteworthy advances In other of the so-called Vanderhllt stocks, notably Northwestern, Can ada Southern, New York Central, 0 C C, and fit, !iils, Michigan Central, and the Now York, Chicago and HI. Ixuis stocks. Much of the buy ing of tlu so stocks vi us of a character generally described as goo I, but the professional element, which Is over alert to suspect ulterior reubons for every movement of the market that does not progress according to Its preconceived notions, professed to detect in the activity and advance In the Vanderbllt slocks an effort to dispose of ouiitlca in ether sections of the market. Many board room traders and others who follow speculation on tho Stock Exchange for a liveli hood, apparently fall to appreciate (hat tho market forsecurltles Is rapidly getting beyond their control, and that In consequence of tho radical changes afTectlng values it can no longer be gaugod by tho standards of a few months ego. Wider fluctuations are the nat ural result of a larger and more widely spread Interest ln the market, while the comparatively uninterrupted advance in prices is warranted by considerations with which every reader of this column Is familiar. Iterations In the market will, of course, take place from time to time, but tho only circum stances likely to bring them about, barring some unforsceu catastronho, are extensive salos to realize profits or a more active monoy market. At the moment thero are no indications of an Important advance In the rates for money, and tho roallxing of profits in a market llko the pres ent one Invariably creates an effoctlvo element of support that bocomes operntivo whenover a recession occurs. It Is undoubtedly truo that a good many securities have been dis tributed within the last two weeks, that Is, passed from strong holders to weaker ones; but In t lew of tho unusual conditions pre vailing tn tho present crop year It may turn out that tho Judgment of sellers of securities Is not asaccuratoasthat of the purchasers. In fore casting tho Innnedlalo future of the markot tho fact should not be Ignored that the approaching end of tbo summer vacation season brings Into the market new buyers, both for speculative and Investment account. Tho chances that IOnilon will eventually chargo Its position on tho market for American securities is a possibil ity that cannot bo Ignored. Tho heaviest trading was In St. Paul, for for which there was an active demand on tho curb after the close of the Kxchango, bocauso of tbo circulation of reports that the directors of the company nt their meeting a week from to-day will declaro on extra dividend of 1 V cent. The advance ln St. Haul after tho closo might be definitely explained by the trnffio re turns of the company for the last weok In August, which show an Increase In gross earnings as compared with the corresponding period of last car of $103,000. This satis factory showing will not bo generally known until to-morrow morning. Tho samo statement applies to a report of the gro3s earnings of tho Hock Island system for last month, showing nn Increase in gross earnings of $375,000. Iho trafflo returns that have como to hand to ilato are unmistakable evidence that the railroads have entered upon a period of prosperity, al though the transportation of various staple crops to market and the return movement of merchandise have not yot fairly begun. The activity In tho Vanderbllt and the Gran ger stocks was supplemented by larger dealings than for somo time past ln Chicago Gas, General Electric, Pact do Malt, and Western Union, all of which were exceptionally strong. A large number of the stocks heretofore neglected also made material progress toward higher prlees. Among them were American Cotton Oil. Colo rado Fuel, Minneapolis and St. Louis second preferred, Pullman Palace Car, Illo Grande Westorn preferred, and Great Northern pre ferred. Toward the close a fresh buying mo e ment sot ln that imparted a strong tonotothe entire market. Final sales compare with those of yesterday as follows: Sjit 1. Stpt. 2.1 stpt. 1. Sor. I.
