Un FRTDAT, Oct. 8. When the transatlantic liners clear from European ports to-morrow there will bo oyer 80,000.000 sold In transit to this country. The amount encased or announced to-day for ship ment from abroad was 04.630,000, of which 81, 500.000 comes from Paris and tho re mainder from London. The Bank of England sold to-day over $2,000,000 In Ameri can easles for export to this country, which is Included In the above figures. The total known specie movement. Including- the $2,300,000 rereiTed during; tho weok, Is now $8,850,000. The chances are that some gold Is under way that has not yet been reported, as some bankers are reluctant to make public their transactions, and, unless tho gold Is withdrawn from some ono of the leading banks of Kurope, like the Bank of England or the Hank of France, It Is difficult to keep track of the move ment from abroad. Trustworthy Information Is that In spite of slightly higher rates of discount In London the movement will continue on an un usually extensive scale during the next few weeks, and It would not bo surprising- If tho total Imports of gold thU month should foot up nearly $23,000,000. As already noted in this column, a part of the specie Is being brousht over In connection with the reorganiza tion of the Union Paclflo Railroad. Trans actions on that account can hardly be described as special, since the European bankers who have contracted with the Union Paclflo Iteorganlza tlen Committee to furnish part of the cash re quired to pay off the Government lien upon the road, really owe the money here just as much as If they had collected commercial acceptances for their New York correspondents In excess of th banker's draft drawn upon them. The bankers who ara Importing specie do not pretend that there Is much If any profit In the present transactions, but It can be stated without fear of contradiction that the Importations are not being mado at a I01S. The rates for money here and tho corpo ration of allot the leading bankers here and abroad. In financing the purchase of the Union Paclflo property the first of next month, facili tate these operations. Later on the imports will bo made at a fair profit because of the re tarded movement of cotton, the steady though moderate repurchases of securities by London, and the decided falling off In the Imports of merchandise. The heavy imports of specie announced to-day bad very little effect upon th. stock market. The total transactions were the smallest re corded on any day since the upward movement In prices began last summer, and the Improve ment In prices was not as great as might rea sonably have been expected. In view of the de cline that has taken place slnoe the beginning of the week. Chicago Oaa again supplied a third of the transactions, and it recovered nearly half of yesterday's net declines. The rally In It was not without effect upon the remainder of the Hit, A good deal of tho buying was obvi ously to cover shorts, but purchases by Interests Identified with the property were alto discern ible. The purchasers ot the Universal and llutual companies ot Chicago Announced to-day their programme for financing their proposi tion by inviting subscriptions At par for $5,250,000 bonds of a company into which the two concerns are to be merged. It Is under stood that the proceods of these bonds will go to the vendors of the two properties. In addition the new company is to issue at onoe $2,230,000 of 0 cent, cumulative preferred stock and an equal amount of common stock. The preferred stock goes as a bonus to the subscribers to the bonds, and the common stock will prob ably be used In large part to compensate the negotiators for tholr ssrvlces. It appears, thereforo, that securities of the par value of $9,730,000 are to be Issued upon properties that at present have nn outstanding capitalisation of $3,000,000, upon only ono-half of which divi dends have been paid. The total capitalization of the proposed nowcompany.asfarasknown.ls $10, 30,000. for It Is to retain In the treasury $1,730,000 of bonds similar to those now of fered for subscription, and $1,780,000 of pre ferred stock. It Is computed that If the Chicago gas companies were capitalized at the same rate that theso two comparatively small out side companies are to be capitalized they would have a capital of $120,000,000. The noteworthy dealings outside of Chicago Qas were In (lonoral Klectrlo, the Granger stocks, Sugar Iteflnlng, American Tobacco, and Manhattan Hallway. The first and last were exceptionally strong, and closed materially higher than yestorday. Sugar Refining was comparatively heavy, and was one of the few stocks that dosed fractionally lower than yes terday. Consolidated Qas was conspicuous again at a net advance of 6 points. The market a a whole showed a tendency to advance, but appears to bo held In check partly by the Inter est that tho Street taken In the local cam paign and alto by tho widespread and protraoted drought at the West Tho larger Interests aro obviously apathetto, possibly to an extent for the same reasons that Influence the rank and file. Trado reports for the week are full ot encouragement. The most Important Item In them Is that relating to bank clearances for the week, which were 14.8 V cent, larger than last week, 32 V cent, larger than for tho corresponding week last year, 3D cent, larger than in 1803, and, what Is much more to the potnt,ovor7 V cent, larger than In 1802. The point was made a few weeks sgo when the stock market was advanc ing rapidly that Wall street was discounting the prosperity of the country at too Bwlft a pace. 1 he figures Just 0. noted, together with the railway traftlc returns that are oomlng to hand, suggest, now that tho market has reacted and become dull, that the country is for once forging ahead ot Wall street. The closing of the stock market was firm at a fractional recession from the best price. final sales compare with thot. ot yesterday as follows: Oof. 7. Oof. 8. Oct 7. Oof. 8.
