Man In Charce Crushed tlliHe Trying to Get n Cilaie That Had Fallen Into the Khan. Klrby S. Nichols was killed yesterday by the elovator he ran In the Washington building, 1 Hroadwny. Nichols dropped his glove about 11 A. M. down the elevator shaft. Ho told Starter Keith that he was going down to the'Tjase of tho shaft to recover It. About flvo minutes later the starter saw Nichols's elevator start up with nobody ln it. Ho knew at onco that something wrong, and hurried to tho basement, where ho found Nich ols In a dying condition. There is only a narrow space between the bottom of the elevator and tho lottom of tho shall, nnd it is supposed thnt while Nichols was trjlng to recover his glovo lie accidentally sturtcd the ma blno downward, nnd was crushed to death by its weight. Tho elevator then btarted upward, and went as far as tho fifth floor. Nichols was taken from the bottom of the shaft and a phvslclnn summoned. He died inn few minutes. There were no external Injuries on the dead man. and it is supposed that ho was crushed internally. Coroners' Physician O'Hanlon will make an autopsy on the body to-day.
