T. Burns the enginoer. When they first found themselves left In clmrgo of the building, after John -McCarthy had tried in vain to collect rents under an agrooment ho mado with tho Comptroller, by which ho was to have half he got they had a talk wlh the tenants, and It was agreed, thoy say, that the tonants should pay a weekly assessment to them which would bo fair pay for tho cost of coal, gas, and service. Some of thoso In 25 Chambers street also agreed to pay. but Wyman & Sons, who had offices on tho second floor, would not pay. When this week opened, with Its colder weather, Frasor and Burns resorted to more radical measures. They shut off the stenm from tbe enllro Chnmhcra street building and stopped pumping water. To tho tenants who obioutcd to this and wcro willing to pay, they offered olllces In the Centro street building, and J. T. Sproguc, Aaron Knplan, and Eldrldgo & Co. moved Into that building. It was stated yesterday that Nathaniel Rosenau, man ager of tho United Hebrew Charities, had writ ten to Meyer Schoenf,old, leader of tbo cast side tailors, asking him to co-opcrato with the so ciety in determining really deserving cases. It was said last evening that a Cherry street press cr had so impressed tho society with a talo or al leged distress that he had rocolvcd $240 since lost January. It was also stated. In reference to this enso, that tin investigation showed the pressor and his wifo to have been earning from fcir to $20 a week nil tho time and that they had kept and paid a domodtlc during that time. Another ense, whero an Attorney street finisher is said lo have rocoivod $150 in various Bums, is to bo Investigated. Schoenfcld said yesterday evening that theso Investigations would likely put a stop to pro fessional begging among tho garment workers. Clamoring for relief, he says, is not a general characteristic of tho oast side tailors, which makes it easier for persons who havo no sense of shame to'outshout deserving cases. Several years ago, when thero was a period of distress on tho east side, sovcral of tho east side restaurant keepers advertised themselves by giving freo dinners to hunory unemployed persons. During one of these dinners some one cxmo In with a report that a bank in Canal Btreot had suspended payment. Two of tho alleged hungry unemployed startod up, clapped their hands to their breasts, where their bank books were, and exolalmod: "My Godl I'm ruined." An effort has been made to revive the scheme of building the Fulton. Wall Street and Cort landt Street ferries surface road, which first came into exlstenco in 1885. An application was recently made to Gen. Collls for permission to open Wall, lne, Liberty, Cortlandt and Wil liam streets ana Maiden lane for tho purpose of laying the traoks, and tho matter is still pend ing in tbo Publlo Works Department. In the papers accompanying tho application the offi cers of tbo company assert that tho resolution giving them tbe franchise was passed by the Board of Aldermon on July 24, 1885, and al though it was not approved by the Mayor ho did not disapprove It, therefore tho resolution became u law. Tbe ofllcors also declara that they have obtained the consents of property holders owning more than 00 per cent, of tbo frontage along the route, and that nothing now stands between them and tbe construction of the road except the consent of tho Commis sioner of Public Works.
