Dec. 27. Today's itook market nas dccldodly lrrcsu lnr. All of the local traction stocks woro atrone tho ureatvr part of tbo day, and a nurobor of tha usually less acttvo shares also Bhowcdagood deal of stronirth. Theso movements wero not without effect upon tbo general speculation. On the other band, the professional element, at least a larre proportion of It, professed to be disturbed by tho gathering of European war ships on the Chineso coast. Decides, tho higher rates for monoy, resulting from the low condi tion of the bank reserves and from the financing of tho Union Pacific transaction, caused a little uneasiness on tbo part ol those who trado on light margins. Tho Street was unable to form any opinion as to tho lews of European specu lators regarding the Chinese situation, because the London Stock Exchange wns closed to-day. and at other centres comparatively little bull ness was done. As to the money market, it Is to bo noted that the Associated Banks now bold only about $11,000,000 In excess of legal re quirements, and that a number of tho banks aro below tho "5 V cent, limit. As there is an active demand for accommodations for mercan tile and manufacturing purposes and a con serving of funds by corporations on account of intorest and dividend payments due early next month, and as domestio exchanges are in tho malnatrainst this centre, it would not be sur prising if tho reserves of the bunka wcro further reduced this week. Tho payment made to day on account of tho purchase of the Union Pacific Railway by the Reorganization Committee was $8,500,000, of which $4,000,000 Is held temporarily by the special depositary banks. It will remain with them until the Government needs the money to redeem its own bonds on and after Jan. 1. A really actlvo money market was averted to-day by the disbursement by the Sub-Treasury of about $4,000,000 for the redemption of Pacific Railway aid bonds. Tbeso circumstances and the fact that tho Troasury will doubtless have to call in at the end of the year the greater part of tho Union Pacific purchase monoy remaining with tho banks make it plain that the money market Is likely to work close for a week to come. As has been tho case for a week past, Manhattan Hallway led the list with respcot to activity. It was exceedingly strong in the lato trading and closed 2a $ cent, higher than last Friday at only a shade below tho best price re corded for it. Tbo movement was accompanied by the usual rumors of a deal of some sort be tween the company and the Metropolitan Streot Railway Company. So far as can be learned there is no basis for theso reports, but the persistent strength of tho market for Manhattan Railway would seem to foreshadow a more tangible and possibly moro important development. Early advances In Metropolitan Hallway and In Third Avenue stock wcro not maintained. This was not surprising in view of the material advances tboso stocks havo recently enjoyod. The specu lation in local traction securities extended to Drooklyn Rapid Transit, which received more attention than for some timo past. In Sugar Refining there appeared to be moder ate realizing early in the day, and this encour aged traders to attack the stock. The Qranccr shares alio yielded fractionally under bearish manipulation. Tennessee Coal and Iron de el oped exceptional strength, and eo did Chesa peake and Ohio, Western Union, tbo Northern Pacific stocks, National Lead, P., C, C. and St. Louis, and American Tobacco. Although the majority of tho Hat closed fractlonall loner than last Friday, none of the declines other than that In Sugar Refining was noteworthy. The closing wan in tbo main steady.
