Is J vapidly reviving tnxougb. tho enterprise of fl Chicago men who havo been -working its old J placers hy means of dredges. In 1802 not less than $000,000 ln gold was taken from the neigh borhood of Bannack. Tho whole surface foot hills and dry gulchos yielded handsomely for several years. The mines played out and scarcely anything was loft of the ancient capi tal when U. J. Helling of Chicago conceived c the Idea of working the bed of Grasshoppor Creek by means of'a floating dredge. Soon afterward the Gold Dredging Company of Chicago was ' organized. Tho dredge is worked by electrical power obtained from a dynamo several hundred yards distant. The operations of the past season have been very f successful. One run alone netted tho company $7,000 in twenty-four hours, which, of course, was from an exceptionally rich pay streak. V The ground and dredgo cost $100,000 and have already been paid for by the gold obtained. 1 The Western Mine Enterprise Company of 1 Butte has a forco sinking at the Horse Prairie I mines, thirty-two miles southwest of Bannack, I for the purpose of examining tho depth and I raluo of the gravel with & view to putting in a I dredge in the spring.
