Tbe tenor of President lIoKlnley'a epeaebat the manufacturers' banquet last evening; and tbe publication of definite jet unofficial state, ments regarding; tbe proposed merger of tbe Kevr York Central and Liko Shore companies imparted a strong; tone to tbe stock market at tbe opening:. Still another factor was tbe an nouncement that the Northern Paclflo Com pany will shortly declare a socond quar terly dividend upon Its preferred stock, London was a moderate buyer of securi ties In tho early dealings, and tbe demand for stocks through commission bouses was larger than for some time past. Tbe strength of the market naturally invited sales to secure profits, and these were supplemented a little later by professional operations, based upon ex pectations of a reaction In prices. Purely specu lative interests professed to be disappointed la " - -. ,i'T'vr" "'if-s trUWmmt of the Bt, Paal and of Urs &.K. and Qolncy Company for Deeeaber, be ua in eachoaso the Increase In operating; expenses was nearly as lares as the increase in gross earn ings. - Blmllar increases may be noted in the Clovoland, Cincinnati. Chicago and SL Louis statement for December, and also In that of tho Erie Company for the same month, which was published this morning. The explanation in eaoh esse is that the companies named are' renewing; their equipment and making various repairs and Improvements, which are charged to opera tingoxpeniea Instead of to capital account. It Is now thoroughly understood that the larger holders of Now York Central stock hare Informally decided upon an Issuo of $100,000, 000 3a collateral trust bonds to take up the en tire capital stock of tho Lake Snore Company. This operation will give the New York Central absolute control not only of the Lako 8horo road, but also the control of tho auxiliary lines like tho Now York, Chlcnuo and SL Louts, which the Lake Shoro Company con trols through Its ownership of tho stock of those companies. The assumption that tho New York Central will benefit dlreotly should tbe Lako Shore Company earn moro than the amount re quired to pay tbe Interest upon tho colltterAl trust bonds issued for its stook Is misleading, for it was learned to-day that the earnings of the Lake Shore road in excess of tho amount required to pay the Interest upon the collateral trust bonds Issued upon Its stock as socurlty are to bo used as a sinking fund for the redemption of those bonds. It is possible, therefore, that in tho course of time the New York Central Compnny may becomo the absolute owner of its Western connection. According to nil accounts the methods of oper ating the New York Central Company will bo improved and Important economics will bo In troduced that will warrant the company in placing its stock upon a 8 V Zccnt. dividend, basin. Tho dealings In that stock were less ex tensive than yesterday, and realizing sales by recent speculative buyors lowerod tho prlco nearly a point. At a reaction of nearly a point from the highest price Northern Pacific prefer red, which lod tho list with respect to activity, closed 304 V cent, higher than yesterday. Of the local traction stocks, Brooklyn Hapld Transit received mo most attention, and In common with others of that group closed fractionally lower. Union Paclflo was exceptionally active and strong, and the same observation applies to the purchase money certificates. Sugar Ke nning was hoavy throughout and closed l'a V cent, lower. After the close of business the statement of tho Northern Paclflo Railway for tho third week in tho current month was furnished for publica tion. It shows an Increase of $87,402, or nearlv 40 9 cent, as compared with the corrcspondlns porlod of last year. For tho first three wooks In January the incrcaso In gross earnings was $272, 082, an increase of 41.7 as compared with the corresponding period of last yosr. For the fiscal year to Jan. 21 the increase in gross earnings is $2,671,703. or 23 V cent. Trado reports for tho week are in tho main encouraging: Clonrlrc House paymonts are 7.3 V cent, larger than in 1802 and railway gross earnings, so far as rcDorted, are 11.2 V cent, larger than woro ever reported in tho corresponding period. In the lata dealings on tho Stock Ex change the room tradors professed to attach fresh importance to tho passage this evening; of tho Teller resolution by tho Senate. Rumors were also circulated of lmpondlng disturbances In Cuba. In consequence the closing was Irreg ular. Final sales compare with those of yesterday as follows: Jan. 87. Jan. 28. Jan. 27. Jan. 28.
