points; the 3K first mortgages ot the New
" York Central and the Lake Shore Ballroad com
panies also bring a premium, the unsecured 3X
per cent debentures of the New York Central
, Ballroad Company sell at about Wand Interest
the guaranteed stocks of the New York and
j New Haven Ballroad Company sell on less than
ra 4 per cent basis, and thoso of the New
York Central, the Pennsylvania, and other
great railroad companies are only a trifle
cheaper. As soon as other securities not now

bought to yield 6 per cent and over, come to be
regarded as equally worthy of confidence, thoy
will advanco necessarily to tho same loveL

It ls to bo obsorred. however, that as a coun
try grows rich and Its capital Inorease. these
cycles aro less and less spasmodla and are loss
and loss destructive. Tho panlo of 1803 was
milder than that ot 1873, and that again more
modorata than bat ot 1637. Intermediate pan
ics also, llko those of 1857 and 1884. wore com
paratively short lived raid limited In tholr ef
fects. In England no suoh oat&strophe ha
been experienced for nearly thirty years. One
was threatened In 1800. at tho time ot the Bar
ing failure, but It was averted by the wise and
prompt action ot the great London banks.
