Jail and a decline In tho price of wheat at Chicago.

f- heaviest trading was In Hnuthern Hallway pro-
M 'ferred, in Brooklyn Itapid Transit and in Con-
T tlnental Tobacco. The last named was ezcop-
itlonally heavy and in sptto of tho final recovory
In prices olosed more than 2 points lower than
' yesterday, Tho Street was unable to discover
the reason for this movement. It Is probably
safe to assume that it was the outcome of the
I speculative humor of those who virtually control
the market for the stork. The recont strongth
k of Southern Railway preferred. Louisville and
SS Nashv Hie and Tennessee Coal and Iron Is now
Jf explained by the authoritative announcement
IjL that the company last named has sold to the
jfi first two Its railway lines for $1,100,000. and
f by doing so has simplified the traflle relations
k between the threo companies. At the ox-
f treme dcclino Brooklyn Itapid Transit en-
2 joyed offeettve support. In consequence it
r closed fractionally higher than yestor-
I jj day. Other stocks that showed exceptional
j strength wero American Steel and Wire,
jjj Delaware and Hudson. American Spirits,
:U Chicago Traction, Chicago, Iniltauapolle and
JP Louisville common, Kansas City, Pittsburg
IS and Oulf, Manhattan Railway and Wheeling
