SINCE the world began one characteristic has always
been dominant in mankind ; that is, the desire to
create to construct abodes -places of business to
build something that would serve for comfort or con
venience, or a monument to his greatness, individually
and collectively. Through the ages this characteristic
has dominated more and more, until to-day the in
ventive and creative genius of man seems without limit.
Every civilized country on the globe is marked with
cities exemplifying the almost perfect constructive genius
of human mind and hand. Invention has always stood
ready to meet every rising necessity. In no other
respect is this so strikingly shown as in the develop
ment of the modern "skyscraper," with its concentrated
economic facilities. Everywhere majestic buildings pinnacle
the sky. Every Art and Trade has contributed to these
creations, but no ONE thing has been of so vital import as
has been the invention of elevators, making each floor,
regardless of elevation, equally accessible and livable. No
feat of engineering science is more wonderful or of
more worldwide usefulness than the invention of
elevators.
Klevators are the OXE thing that has made possible the construction
of the Titanic structures of stone and steel that everywhere to-day dot
of Trade and Industry. The ONE thine that has heightened
ine," and marvelously increased the land values of the world's
greatest cities, insuring to them unlimited develop
ment, concentration, and prosperity.
There have been recorded in the world a large
number of inventions calculated to solve the problem
of passenger and freight elevation, but it remained
for an American institution The Otis Elevator
Company, 17 Battery Place, New York to perfect
bring to the attention of the Commercial and
Industrial worlds elevator inventions that meet every
exacting requirement, and that render the highest
effective and economic service.
The achievement of this Company in perfecting
the highest type of elevators has gained for its product
recognition as the standard of excellence throughout
the civilized world, and it is fitting tribute to the
superior quality of their product that Otis Elevators
should have been chosen (as has been the case in
nearly every other renowned building of the world)
for installation in the new Woolworth Building, now
in course of construction at Broadway and Park Place.
New York.
Since this is to be the tallest building at present
erected in the world, requiring the highest elevators ever
built, the elevator equipment in this building is neces
sarily extensive and stupendous. It requires a battery
3-1 elevators to take care of the business that will be
conducted in this immense area of floor space.
As an example of the engineering ingenuity
shown in this installation four of the elevators
rise from the first to fifty-first floor a per
pendicular elevation of (579 feet (I inches.
This is the most remarkable elevator installa
tion ever conceived and built.
THIS INSTALLATION CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING fi ROUPS :
