The Ice Cream Workers I'nlon, with 9,1100 members In Manhattan and Brook lyn, decided yesterday to go on a gen eral strike to-day. There Is more Ice cream consumed on the Kast Side than In any other part of the city, especially on Sundays, and according to the leaders of the strike an ice cream famine will result from the strike In tho places where mpst of It Is used. Preparations have been made for this strike for some months, the principal grievances being long working hours nnd In dark and unventllated cellars. The latter grievance may not be possible of settlement, us Ice cream must be made In cool places, but according to the Ice cream worker when there Is an un usual demand for the article, as during festivals, they have In many cases to work twenty-four hours on a stretch. Assistant Organizer Morris Volpart said last night that most of the Ice cream workers are employed In large factories, from which the Ice cream Is sent to stores throughout the city. In anticipation of the strike, he said, the Vienna and Khrlleh Ice cream com panies made un agreement with the union granting a shorter workday and nn Increase In wages. The principal demands of the Ice cream workers are KM a week for first hands, $20 a week for second hands. SIS a week for third hands, a twelve hour workday and a day off every two weeks. Some of the larger employers. It was said, have formed an association and may fight the strike. The strike will mainly affect the places where the cheaper kinds of Ice cream are made. R. H.
