RESOLUTE LAUNCHED; EVERY INCH A RACER Hcrrcshoff Cup Defender Not Reality, but Looks Full of Power. RIO FLEET SALUTES HER Mins Grace Vandcrbllt Smashes Rottlc of Wino as Yacht riungcs Down Ways. rtr.taTOt., R. I.. April 55. The Resolute, built by Herreshoff to defend the Amer ica's cup against the Shamrock IV., waa launched successfully this evening.' The yacht MU1 down the ways from the north ihop of the Herreshoff works and was rheored hy somo 1,500 spectators nnd itutcd by u' Meet of launches and yachts. It wan n cold, raw evening. The sun, which had shone fitfully during tho day, hud disappeared behind a bank of gray clouds, and a cold wind blew across the waters of Nnrragansett Hay. These con ditions, however, did not check the en thusiasm of the inhabitants of this town, once famous as the home of Intrepid whalers, and all turned out to see the masterpiece of Designer Nat a, Herres hoff uncovered. The Resolute has been built under the usual cover of secrecy and all were anxious to feo what the yacht looked like. Hhe is not u beauty. Her bow Is buff and her counter short unu broad, but she looks a racer full of power. Capt. Nat Herreshoff was tho master nf ceremonies. He had announced 6:30 as the time for the launching, and soon after 6 oYlock the crowd began to gather on the two piers north uml south of the shops. In the north shop a platform had been erected under the yacht's bow for the christening party, i and other guests stood In the gullerles. v On the platform were Commodore and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Htid Miss Grace Vanderbllt, who was to act ns sponsor for the yacht. At 6:30 o'clock all was In readiness for the launching. It. tV. Kmmons. tSd. the manager of the Resolute, and former Vice-Commodore Henry Walters climbed onto the yacht's deck, where were already Capt. Chrlstlunsen nnd twelve of tho yacht's sailors. Workmen underneath the hull knocked away the blocks, leaving the vessel standing In the cradle. Then very slowly the cradle with Its precious burden began to glide down the ways out of the shop. At tlrst the move ment was Inch by Inch, and at the first tremor Miss Vanderbllt smashed a bottle nf wine on the yacht's bow and named It Resolute. Then the yacht gained speed and when clear of the shop the cradle crumpled up and the yacht hit the water Just as the chute boats do at Coney Island. .She settled down nt once and cracefuliy curtsied her acknowledgment of the plaudits. The American yacht ensign was hoisted ovr the setrn. a pole was stuck In the mast step nnd signal code Hags were strung from stem to stern, with the New York Yacht Club flag on the pole. The Resolute was warped alongside the pier under the shears ready to have her'mast stepped on Monday morning. The steam yacht Viking, owned by Rear Commodore George K. Ilaker. Jr., arrived off tho Herreshoffs' works at 10 o'clock. Sho anchored and saluted. On board with Commodore Raker were Commodore Dallas B. Pratt, former Commodore Fred Tick O. Ilourne. former Vice-Commodore Henry Walters and former Rear Commo dore W. Hutler Duncan. Former Commo dore Cornelius Vanderbllt, Mrs. Vander bile and Miss Grace Vanderbllt went to Providence on the limited and returned from there to Bristol. The tender of the Resolute, the steamer Cape Cod. was moored at tho end of the Herreshoff pier. Sho was decorated gayly with bunting and at the mainmast tlew the red and white striped pennant of Robert W. Emmons Id, the manager of the yacht. Mr. Kmmons had with him Charles Francis Adams Id. who Is to ho 'he helmsman, or as he facetiously re marked, "merely a paid hand" ; George H. Nichols, who will be navigator; John Parkinson. Jr., who will holn the watch, nd George i:. Corniack, secretary of the New York Yacht Club. These five will bo the amateur crow of the Resolute. It. 1'. Toil's new schooner Kutoura was at anchor near the works. She Is a very handsome vese and will carry an enormous sail spread. Her masts, built for an old cup defender, lower way up In the sky. Tt was a gala day In town. Automobiles nnd excursionists arrived In time for the launching and crowds gathered along the wall on the waterfront. Many of the townsfolk were admitted on the piers be Iween which tho Resolute was lowered Into the water. Launches came from all points too, and some came from the torpedo station at Newport, bringing naval officers. At noon those who were on hand had a rtiVAte view of the yacht ns sho stood In the north shop. The sun wns streaming through the window, and the bronze hull, which has been burnished, shone like a watrltcase This bronie plating Is a bcsatlful piece of work. The plates are riveted flush, not hipped, and consequently the underbody Is perfectly smooth. The !ad keel Is entirely covered with the hrnnie plating.
