A Profitable Use
for Money
For many reasons sound
short-term notes are at

banks and institutions
generally. These notes
'nn he purchased at prices
to yield between six and
seven per cent.: they keep

can be' readily replaced

ably exaRKerateil, but there was no que- i
Uou that It was suhAtantlal In amount.
In various directions prices were car
rier) to or through the teel of the I.on- i
lon settlement of July 27 lat, wUlch was 1
enough to brlnu In collateral from loans
tied up ever since that period. Further
more, the strenKtli of prlccw, combined
with the low forelpn exchange mnrltet.
was bound to stimulate foreign selllnc.
The fact that the market displayed
so much capacity to take these offerings
at advances could not be otherwise than
favorably commented upon. It has to
bo recocnlred that eecurltles liquidated
by Europe must not only he taken by
the market but must be absorbed, and
the process can hardly fall to Influence
the prl'e movement from time to time.
Nevertheless, our situation lias been
chancing vastly In the last few months
nnd there nre weighty economic reasons
why the return of our securities from
abroad should be welcomed. Tho greater 1
firmness of sterling exchango during the
day silggeted that the fresh opportu- ;
' nlty for Kuropnnn liquidation of stocks
. here was operating to relieve some of
the strain which the exchange market
has been showing.
It was not obvious that any new con
siderations entered Into Walt Street ac
tivities. The stock market gave evidence
that the principal causes of developments
therein weie the momentum which It had
gathered lately and the more or le-s
' public- reply elicited by tho market's ad-
vertisement that constructive factors ns t
well as d. structlve forces wero present
m conditions now nnd that these were
operating on a very strong technical
' position represented by relatively low
prices, for etooks and a comparatively
weanty supply, except such as might be
brought out by the Inducement of rising
quotations.
Peace talk of one sort and another i
was heard in numerous quarters, but
Wall Street a n whide was not greatly
persuaded by It. Ideas about the early
term. nation of the war by diplomatic
proivses do not lit with the persistent
pla.'lng of orders for war supplies, nor
with tho Increasing aggreAiveness of
military operation. H Is of more con
sequenco that the minds of binkers are
engaged with negotiations for the promo
tion of short time loans here for foreign
borrowers. Tli.s will assure a persistent
