PUBLIC UTILITY SECURITIES.
An aspect of mora aggressive strength,
though not pronounced, characterised
the stock market yesterday. Trading
was on a largor scale than the aver
age of previous sessions this week, al
though about half of the day's volume
was owing to the transactions In tho first
hour. The net result of the dealings
was a small nvcrago gain, with nu.
merous substantial advances In mora or
less special descriptions.
ltcports of additional war contract
were reflecled In sharp upturns In war
order stocks. Among other featurea was
Missouri rnclflc, which rallied at tn
expense of bearish traders when It be
came rather definitely known that the
Could Interest hnd agreed to a deposit
of Its notes for the purposes of nn ex.
tension, but Wall Street remained some,
what Justifiably In doubt If a financial
readjustment of the property was pos
sible without a receivership. On the
other side of the market the Hock Island
shares declined without any necessity
of explanation, and Chesapeake and
Ohio continued to show weakness, which
was accounted for late In the day by
the announcement that the directors had
deferred dividend action until next
month, perhaps nwaltlng a settlement
of International afTalrs Involving this
country. Meanwhile they nuthorlied the
purchase of a substantial number of
locomotives nnd freight cars.
Apart from Its particular featurea the
share list suggested generally n rising
trend opposed by the restraining In
fluences of the uncertainties regarding
the status which the United States Is
to hold toward the European war as the
result of the recent Washington note
to Herlln. Dealings In stocks did not
srrtn to be quite so exclusively profes
sional as they had been for some days
past and there were signs that pur
chases for the long account were not
being altogether withheld for contln
cenclea which might furnish more favor-
able opportunities Evidence of a large
rompanv on the waiting side has not
I been altogether to the liking of Inter
I ests and Individuals who are confident
' that despite the present uncertainties
the near future offers a reasonably well
I assured prospect of general business ac
tivity and a rising level of quoted values.
For the rest the market seemed
to represent the conflicting Influences
of the considerations derived from Italy's
apparent approach to Immediate en
trance Into the European war on the
side of the Allies and the prevailing
doubts sliout tho nature of the Herman
reply to Washington and Its conse
quences. Overnight despatches from
abroad reporting Herman press comment
did not contribute to the persistence
of Injudicious hopefulness respecting
I Germany's official attitude and vtasn-
optimistic. This was responsible for
a depressed opening In stocks, which
was wwiftly succeeded by an alt around
rally. Short covering encountered con
structive purchases and the moderate
competition of this sort disclosed a
scanty supply of stocks which lasted
all day.
The news from Italy seemed to be a
factor In the early recovery and further
I display of strength because It was some-
j thing definite for Wall Street to act
1 upon after shivering so many days over
i uncertainties and Its detlnlteness was
i widely construed as of favorable Im
port In that an Increase In the scato of
I the war has been regarded as llkelv to
I shorten lt durntlon. However, there
I has been so much backing and filling on
I Italy's part that even-nt the Inst the
i financial community was hot dlspsjsed
i to regard Its course as decided, anil In
any case It was manifest thnt tho Wall
, Street situation wan dominated as It
should be by the Issues which have been
. Joined between Washington and Herlln.
; Again the foreign exchange market
: presented features of emphatic slgnlflt
cance In their proof of the Increasing
1 strength of American finance and the
Increasing strain abroad. All forms of
remittance were weak. French ex
ehnngo was extraordinarily weak, checks
being quoted at 6.42, a price for which
recollection waa unable to recall any
precedent here. At the same time, with
sterling at I'arls away up, sterling ex
change sold In this market down to Its
previous low level. Italian bins ex
hibited renewed weakness, which corre
sponded with the character of the news
reports from Rome.
On all account wars waa grouna ror
predicting a large expansion of the gold
Import movement unless measures are
adopted to finance foreign purchasers of
our commodities and war supplies on
soma other basis than that of the tem
porary credits granted by bankers. The
weekly statement of the Bank of Prance
showed the large withdrawal of void for
transfer to London and London cables
Inspired rumors of further taking of
gold for this market. Meanwhile an
nouncement was made or an additional
engagement of 11,000.000 gold for Im
portation from Japan.

In the oases of a few atooks on the
Consolidated Stook EbroharnTe special In
fluences had an effect during the course
of the day. Rock Island was weak on
reports of a large assessment to come.
It opened at 21 nnd declined to 19,
closing at 20. Chesapeake and Ohio
sold off sharply, Influenced by talk of
a passing of the dividend. It opened
at 40 U, i of a point under Its clos
ing price on Wednesday, and after sell
ing at 40 declined to 38, but closed
at 89.
Missouri Pacific which had been a
weak feature the day before, developed
firmness. The opening for Missouri
Pacific waa 10, from whloh price It
rose to 13, closing at 13. United
Stntes Steel common, of which 9,710
shares changed hands, placing It In the
lead In respect to volume, opened :.t
61, of a point under Wednesday's
closing price, but later advanced lo
63, closing at 82, Heading's open
Jng waa 142, also under the night
before, and after touching 141 It rose
to 143, closing at 143, Sales of all
stocks totalled 29,520 shares.

THE COFFER MARKET.
Further sensational sales of sperter
were made yenterdny nt still new high
prices. There was business done at
16 cents for August delivery of prime
Western grade. December bookings ot
the same grade were made at 16
cents a pound. Brass specials, which
on Wednesday sold at 16 cents, ad.
vanccd to 19 cents a pound. This was
the level reached on Wednesday by In
termediate grades, which rank a trine
better than tho prime Western ma
terial. The best grades were quoted
nominally at about 23 cents a pound.
This week's business In spelter has
been nothing short of sensational. In
fact the bookings of producers were
estimated last night to have been more
than would ordinarily be exported In a
year. Inquiry Is In the market for
even a larger amount, but producers
slate thnt they have no nearby spelter

There has always been a e'.ajrs of
brokers In the Street who get their busb
ness by catering to the gambling ele.
ment ; that Is. the people who speculate
on Insufficient margins. These brokers,
of courf-e. need a constantly renewed
supply of customers. They use them
up quickly Competition Just now ap
pears to be keen, because some of these
houses have been using unusual methods
to get customers. A large commission
house this week discovered that an In
dividual poeilng as a dissatisfied cus
tomer had been approaching their other
customers) in their own offices and so
liciting business for one of their rivals.
The principal Inducement offered was
that so-nnd-rio down the Street would
buy anything on the list on a ten point
margin and the active leaders on five
points. The discovery waa made through
Information given by a loyal customer,
who felt that the firm should know what
was going on.
THE STEEL MARKET.

The steel market was quiet yester
day so far as domestic demand for com
mercial products was concerned, but
buying of steel bars for the manufacture
of shrapnel continued active. It was
reported that the United States Steel
Corporation received nn order for 9.400
tons to be used for this purpose. The
materlfil dislred is of jnuch higher
grail than the ordinary steel bar and
tl.e price Is understood to be In the
neighborhood of 12 per 100 pounds.
The prevailing quotation on the com
mon class of steel bars Is 11.20 to
J126 per 100 pounds. The New York
Air Brake Company Is also In the
market for a large tonnage.
It Is expected that the United States
Sree Corporation will make a better
bowing In May than In April. The
corporation has enjoyed some Improve,
ment In export business, and domestic
demand In some lines has been better.
THE CURB MARKET.
Prices moved Irregularly In the curb
market yesterday, with active trading
confined to a few Issues. American
Zinc held Its prominent place In the
industrial division, being by far the
most nctlve stock and advancing ss
high as 47. The final quotation for
the Issue represented a gain of nenrly
2 points above Wcdnesdny. Interna
tional Petroleum. United Cigar Stores
and United Profit Sharing were the
only other shares In this group to
attract attention, but they made prac
tically no rrlee changes.
Business in the oil shares dwindled
to a very' small total, and quotations
were about steady. There were some
firm spots In the mining department
on good Inquiry, hut alterations for the
most part were uninteresting. Penn
sylvania 4s were nctlve but weak,
while Chile Copper 7s scored a further
giln of 1 point.
