Street to do much trndlng In stocks wan Intensified yesterday. In a season of un ccrtnlnty even the regular week end sus pension of the Ktnck market usually has nit effect on the volume of business niid sometimes on prices, as professional speculators ex-en up tholr commitments. It was not known until after the close yesterday that the Stock Kxchange would remain open on Saturday, nnd ex pectation that the recess would he from Friday night until Tuesday morning; In fluenced the trading;. It was not apparent that uneasiness over possible happenings during the re cess was responsible for any tendencies tn the dealings, which, Indeed, lacked definite tendency. The market was moro or less Irregular, varying from firmness to heaviness at different times and closing without any particular fea ture, although firmness was shown by Importnnt shares toward the end of the session. Transactions In bonds were on rela tively a much more active scale than business In stocks nnd Wall Street noted with much interest the signs that foreign liquidation of bonds wan assuming somewhat larger proportions. Pre sumably Great Ilrltaln was the principal source of supply, although there were sales for continental account, and some stocks were Included In the foreign re- 1 1 -I S 1 ...1.1- P I , , . ,1,1111,,, luc nnui. uilci lllfs iiviii J abroad were well absorbed and the stock any very depressing response to the ex pected dislodgment of American securi ties from foreign hands In consequence of the new financing which the war re quires. Overnight consideration seemed to lead to the conclusion that the New York city bond sale had been very sat isfactory under the circumstances and was not to be considered as having Im mediately adverse Implications for quoted values generally. The market for the new city issues developed rising strength In the course of the day. Foreign exchange seemed to disclose some results of the recent liquidation of our securities from London. After ster ling had gone to a new low level it ral lied rather sharply to around 4.7614 for demand. Other forms of remittance, however, were even weaker than they had been. The exhibit of the country's foreign trade In May added nothing to tho Information already vouchsafed to the financial community In the statements Issued from week to week, but It Is worth observing that exports for the month were more than 179,000,000 In ex cess of the largest total for any pre vious May and the preliminary figures (how an export balance of more than $131,000,000. For tho fiscal year ended yesterday the total export balance of trade went well beyond 11,000,000,000. We are now approaching the season when normally the outward trade move ment Is the largest of the year, and ex porters, particularly tn the grain and cotton trade, are beginning to be ap prehensive over the conditions In the foreign exchange market. The situation points convincingly to the necessity of arrangements which will substitute something else than foreign bills for a material portion of the means of mak ing payments for our commodity ex ports. The logic of the situation sug gests that In some way or another very extensive credits should be established here for other countrlet. Weekly reviews of the iron and steel trade noted that the steel Industry was entering the second half of the year with production 50 per cent, ahead of January 1 and both production nnd con sumption on an Increasing scale. From the copper metal market came reports of new Inquiries. Crop advices were favor able In the main, weather conditions be ing still worse for corn than for other important crops. A respected trade au thority estimates that hay, which Ib one of the most valuable of the country's products, will make a record outturn. THE SUGAR MARKET. SHORT TERM NOTES. Int. "-cuilty. Rate. Pay. CIreat Britain was again a buyer of refined sugar in this market and yes terday's business brought that country's total takings for the week up to between tri.OOO and 05,000 tons. The price paid was 4.85 cents. The revival of export buying had a beneficial Influence on the market and domestic demand has again become active as a result. However, all Interests were doing business on a 6 cent basis. The demand for with drawals on old contracts was good. OF WALL STREET. Itahber's Dividends, The directors of the United States llubber Company meet to-day at 10 A. M. to tako action on the dividend. It Is not expected that there will be any de lay In the announcement of their de clston. There were no fresh Intimations yesterday as to what this decision will be. in some quarters it was stated rather confidently that the dividend would either be left alone or stt the most would be out from 6 to 4 per cent. For some days sentiment has been more cheerful retarding the outcome of the dividend meeting tend earlier convictions that drnjttlo action would be taken were moderated. But this change In feeling may easily be due to the check to the decline In the price, of the stock. Just as the previous depression was to a large extent caused by the excessive weak ness. The foot Is that the publlo In gen eral has had absolutely nothing upon which to base opinions In regard to the dlvldond policy of the company except the action of the stock. The tape tins suggested a cut, but not the complete passing of the dividend. As regards the market position of the stock the signs were that profit taking by the shorts was Indulged tn yesterday. But the dealings were not large enough to Indi cate any wholesale rush to cover. The market was nervous and unsettled, as It would be a short account were wait ing for stock to come In and hoping desperately for the worst. The stock loaned at 1 per cent, as compared with a flat rate on Tuesday. It tn on the strength of a supposed unwieldy short Interest that noma speculators are look ing for higher prices Irrespective of what action may be taken at the divi dend meeting. Some speculators made bets that the stock would se'l at 60 before 60. The Weather OatleoU. For some weeks. the Street has beem tipped off that a eltarp movement win coming In American Ice. The tip has bean handed round In the usual strictly confidential way, with the result that not a single commission house and very few Individual siieculators were with out the Information. The tip hnn not made good so far, It Is acknowledged , but nobody ts trlvInK up hope yet on that ocoourrt. It is undomtood that the weath er has been unfavorable!. SweUesrlne hot wecthw Is the best possible stimulus to bullish enthusiasm on American Ice. Tiro first really hot day 1s, therefore, the signal for the party. The weather chart in quite a number of offices nowadays is utu-llert reuglously. lvngaged In thl.s task yeerteirdaj-, one broker oonflded to his neighbor that on tho last hot day he made as neat a turn on the hull side as you could wish, lie exiecta to do it again. Money nates. In view of the outcome of the city I bond eoJe It Is Interesting to note that a perceptive chance, ha,, occurred In the market for time mon-y nates are no nigher, but funds ore not quite sol freely ofTerwl nf thoy have fceen, sug gesting tJtnt the big i-ourves of supply are holding off a little. There Is a dlfctlnot dlHlncllnatlon by the big lenders to put out money over the yenr, as com pare,! with loons i-unntng up to the end of December. Heoently rrtx months loar.s, running to tho middle of January, 1 1916, for Instance, were quoted l. of 1 5er cent, higher titan loans maturing only a few weeks earlier. Unrd to Beat, The uniting element Is finding the present market nn extremely difficult one to squeeie the dally fractions out of. it Is hard to bull and hard to bear. De clines bring dulness and advances nn-1 parently bring stock. Trices nre deud- ocked, but as to what the depressive Influence Is nobody Is very clear. Hupor- nciauy ire marKet may be a little over sold, but there Is no doubt that a con siderable long position Is being carried. especially In the Industrials. The Street s bullish and few peonle think It worth while to consider the bear side seriously. It l.s this strong undercurrent of bullish ness thnt explains tho Inherent strength of the market, but It does not explain the repressive Influence. Take Steel, for instance, me public Is bullish on Steel. be trade news lins been excellent and it s felt that Steel will lead the next ad- vance. Speculative sentiment tn regard to Steel Is such. It Is claimed, that an advance In the price squarely above C2 would undoubtedly attract a huge fol lowing, If this Is the case the mystery is now i no price remains wiiere It does, Some observers exploln the nroblem bv foreign selling, which. It Is claimed, has come- In a steady trickle. THE STEEL MARKET.
