Considerable comment was heard on
the floor as a result of the discussion
by Hlchard H. lMmunde, editor of the
Jlnnuucliiicra Record of Baltimore, who
criticised Senator Hoke Smith and other
politicians who Ignore facts In their de
mand that the Hrltlsh blockade be
raised. Mr. Edmunds contended that It
wai wild agitation nnd excessive cotton
production Instead of war which was
hurting the South. Ho concluded his
statement with tho following comment:
"So lone as there are so-called po
litical leaders who use such situation as
the present to main tho world believe
that the South has cotton strings for Its
backbone and cotton bolls for its brains
o long will It be Injured In the world's
estimation by tlielr work."
The week end figures were without In
fluer.ee. The Into sight for the week was
placed at SO, SIS bales, against 23,066
list year. The total for the season
which represents the entire crop with the
exception of one day'e receipts. Is 15,
147,000 bales, against 14.S54.000 last
year.

outlook: "Threshing has mvle fair
progress In the southern half of the win
ter wheat belt and In Texas, Oklahoma,
foutheanern Kansas, southern Illinois,
Ohio and Kentucky threshing operations
are being pushed rapidly, with weather
conditions favorable.
"Rains In central and northern Kansas
and Nebraska have been heavy. Much
wheat will not be saved and Kansas
crop estimates nrn sharply lower. In
the main sections of tho wheat belt the
weather has been distinctly unfavorable
nnd reports of sprouting are beginning
'n come from widely scattered section".
The loss of merchantable wheat will be
heavy."
THE SUGAR MARKET.

The American Sugar Roflnlng Com
pany lowered Its list price for standard
granulated sugar yesteiMay to 5. SO cents,
and In addition announced that tt would
allow w thdrawals, against contracts
look at 3 90 cents and 6 cents, at 6.75
rents. It. II Howell, Son & Co. reduced
their list price to 5 75 cents mid continued
to allow withdrawals at 5 70 cents. All
other refiners were accepting new busi
ness for prompt shipment and with
drawals on old contraots at 5 70 cents.
So far lie new business was concerned,
'he response to the lowering of prices for
rflnH sugar was rather slow, owing to
the fact that there wer a largo number
f old lontracts still outstanding. Thero
was a good withdrawal demand.
The raw sugar market was dull, with
of prices unchanged at 4.64 for Cubas

The Bronx was the center of all real
estate activity yesterday, and a good
volume of high class business was re
ported ns a result. The best of the
transactions was the sale of an apart
ment house under construction In the
university Heights section. Several
good sized plots In well located sec
tions were sold to builders and a num
ber of small Investors took over flata
nnd dwellings. The Manhattan market
was without feature. Plana were filed
for nnother high class apartment In the
I'ark Avenue section, to be erected by
Dins; & lJIng. In the leasing branch the
most Interesting deal Involved a West
eighteenth street building owned by
the Consolidated Oas Company, which
will be made over Into lofts.

NEW CONEY ISLAND HOTEL.
Felix Mlserocchl, owner of the Hotel
Rovers! of this city, hat commissioned
Architect N. Serrachln to prepare plans
and specifications and to superintend
the erection of a new hotel and res
taurant to be built at the southeast
corner of Ocean Parkway and Neptune
avenue, Brighton Beach. The new
building will be designed In the Italian
style and will contain all modern Im
provements. In front of the now hotel
there will be gardens with a fountain.
Construction work will be started In the
spring.
